radio suggestions

#51593

Post by wadedog »

I own a 2005 silverado truck.
I want a cheap decent working radio for highway use and very little around town use ( too many knuckleheads around here )
I say cheap because i don't want an expensive radio stolen.
I was thinking of buying a handheld to hide under the seat and use at those times or a small radio and mount it under the dash and use a antenna that replaces the existing am/fm antenna and has a splitter to use with a cb and still use for a am/fm radio.
any advice for me?

Hi Wadedog,

Contact [Please login or register to view this link] and e-mail them about your needs. I would stay away from those combo AM/FM/CB antennas. They are kinda like one of those convertible ladders. Not a good step ladder and not a good roof ladder.

I have a 2005 GMC Crew Cab. You don't need something as fancy as I've got, but if you'd like to see pictures of it go to spaces.msn.com/bryanemily and then look at the photo album for my truck.

Take care, and contact radioactiveradio.com. You'll be impressed.

go with a cobra 25 ltd classic or cobra 29 ltd classic
with simple peak and tune
with a mag mount you can take off and on

wouldn't go with a little wil or k30

might look into a Wilson 1000 or Wilson 5000

Good info from North Texas Mudduck.

If you want an even smaller radio, the Uniden Pro510 ia a good one and very compact.

Wilson 1000 mag mount would be an excellent choice.

For a good small radio I'd have to agree with Rex_foxhound and vote for the Uniden Pro510XL, small and great audio.

Thanks for the welcome.

I have a k40 mag mount that i used to have on my older truck and it was a pain going under drive thru over hangs, and i hated to jump out all the time and remove the mast from the mag. also it advertises that i have a cb installed and risk it being stolen.
Also shaft i went to your space but i couldn't find your truck pics ,only the mustang and new york pics.

Really? You'll probably need to click the More Albums arrow under the pics and that will drop down a selection bar and then you'll be able to select it.

Ok, my mistake, i see the pics now.
I like your set up, look nice.
what kind of antenna and radio do you have, whats the box under the radio?
I might go back to installing my old radio back in but i hate the antenna hitting every branch and over hang i go under.

The box under the radio is an Aries Frequency Counter. I'm running a Wilson 2000 antenna. I've thought about changing to a Wilson 1000 roof mount, but the current set up I have might be easier for taking down when I have to go into a parking garage.

Well, what are you wanting to accomplish with your new radio?
That's big question.

well i'm thinking now on a walkie talkie type radio maybe,
I was looking into the type where everything is in the mic so that the box could be hid and the mic doesn't stand out asking to be stolen.

I really only need a radio for when i'm traveling on the highway and have a range of five miles or so ?
I just hate having my antenna hit every low branch and drive thru over hang, maybe i would mount a full on radio under the dash if i could have a good very short antenna, any suggestions?

Just my 2 cents but I would suggest the Mini Magnum from radioactive, it does look real impressive but one bad A@# little radio. Very decent price too.

New Magnum Mini-Mag: Compact 10 Meter!!
Introducing the Magnum Mini-Mag 10 Meter Amateur Radio

The Magnum Mini-Mag is a new radio from Magnum that gives you 10 meter features in a radio that will fit in almost any vehicle out there. In the past many manufacturers have designed compact radios that were no only expensive, but also had a short life span. Not this radio!!

I would love to buy one of those Mini Mags. But I just ordered a SWP General Lee and I bought 2 almost new Uniden Pro510XLs. The wife ain't going to let me buy anymore radios.

If you have a center console in that Cheby (and it has the same cubby hole config as mine)...it'll fit in the upper of the 2 cubbys with a little trimming.

see the album section for my pics (General Lee is in the lower cubby)

I don't have a console, i have the split bench seat.
I don't understand the conversion from 10 to 11 meter, how can you have 400 channels on 11 meter without crossing over into 10 meter range.
please explain the conversion reasoning for me,thanks.
