Ranger RCI-2980 or Galaxy Saturn

#53950

Post by The13Bats »

I have noticed thru my years of radios many cases of different brands look the same ,

Like my old Texas Star looked like a Galaxy without a freak counter,

So Like I was saying I need a new radio lost all my other stuff and I want a base this time,

The Ranger RCI-2980 "looks" like a Galaxy Saturn
Are they the same or is one better?

I like the cheesy stuff like echo and talk back...

What do they do out of box then what can they do?

All bearfoot please.

Thanks and Cheers,
P.

2980 is the better radio for sure, tuned it will do 40 to 50 watts, 2980 is a better SSB radio also

Is this an opinion or do you have some factual info to help clarify this ?

I have had a few Saturns but never owned a 2980, so I'm curious as well ?

I think the 2517 is a much better radio than all of them in that class. This is based on performance in TX and RX and also the reliability..

I was under the impression that the RCI 2980WX and Galaxy 2517 were the same radio with the only difference being that the 2980WX has weather bands and a six digit counter where the 2517 only has a 5 digit counter.Plus the Galaxy is a little higher in price.

Is this correct?

You can't go wrong with the RCI, now the Saturn is a good radio, but pending on what you want to use it for the RCI does much better on sideband and you can make it talk louder.

60 watts? The one i looked at 2 weeks ago before i got my RCI 2995 would only do 35 but that was with out being clipped or mod kitted. If you want a good base that you wont need an amp to talk skip then maybe you should look at an 2995. A little high ( $550.00 ) but will do 200 clean and clear watts and have all the extra channels you could ever want. BUT. No talk back and no echo. These could be added if you could take it to someone who had a clue and would do it the right way not the cheap and easy way!

You may also want to check out EBay. You may be able to find a Saturn turbo or 2980/2517 for less than $300.00 that's been well cared for. I do think you would like a 2980/2517 though. A few guys on my home channel have em and they all sound really good.
