One buddy says it's junk,

A boat anchor is an OLD radio or amp, tube, that weighs enough to BE a boat anchor. I know exactly what that means...I volunteered to carry a vintage Gonset tube amp to an older guy's pickup at a ham swap recently...figured it couldn't weigh THAT much. It had to weigh at least 100 lbs. THAT's what people mean by "boat anchor"...it doesn't mean JUNK at all.

I'm just trying to learn and get some info,

I used the term "boat anchor" as in "worthless" go throw it in a lake,
Never took the term as deeply and literal as you do, roll:
I have been around a lot of boating people for many years never once saw someone actually use an old radio as an anchor as you suggest doing,

But anyway after all that you didn't mention if you believe my radio to be beyond practical repair,
