Ground straps?

Post by Becker »

Where can I get some ground straps at? If I can't find any straps could I just use some stranded c-o-p-p-e-r wire?

I get all mine at the local CB shop, but I'm sure our fine sponsors have it also.

I cheated and used the "redily available approach". I used co-pp-er ends and 8 ga wire to make my ground straps. Standard straps are open wire web but they dont have to be as the real purpose is to make a contact between points A and B. 8 Gauge is over kill for the power I use but I got a deal on a roll so what the heck.

I use 12 gauge stranded copper wire, and crimp ring terminals on the ends. I always use green insulation, because to me, green means ground, even though on most vehicle, black is ground.

Yep...12 gauge c0pper works. Or rather, it's always worked for me. If you start running big wattage, you might consider investing in the full sized straps though. I think RA or Sparky's can get them for you, and if not I'm sure one of them can at least point you in the right direction.

I went to the auto battery department at wallmart and used 6 Gage battery cable for lawn tractors. I cut them down to the size I needed. You can make a few of them out of one cable. Bought extra copper connectors to use on the ends that I cut. Worked good for me. And very inexpensive.

Most auto parts stores have them, also you can possibly get a deal from any wire company on-line, I got some from a radio station when they were revamping their tower, got 200 feet for 5 bucks!

I like to use the braid from RG8U coax.I have a bunch of old coax here and all you have to do is cut off the length that you need, slit the outer jacket with a razor ,squeeze the braid between your thumbs to get it inching forward, and once you get it a couple of inches off the foam dielectric it slides right off.Flatten it out and solder on a couple of terminals and your set, roger???Makes a killer braided ground strap and fits my budget  .
