Cobra 148, Uniden Grant XL, Galaxy 949, and 959. Which would you go with? Aside from the echo noise and roger beep, which would be best, as far as ssb and am output, best sounding and best to mod?

Just what I found from other people on here was that the new Cobra 148GTL are not as easy to modify, and some people wont touch that type of radio. I used to have the new Cobra 148GTL and I had asked around if it could be modded, The general feeling i got was that it is difficult to mid, and would cost more then it was worth to carry out those mods by a CB shop. I switched later on to the RCI-2950, with noticeable improvements.

Yeah learned my lesson, wont bother with a soundtracker or nightwatch version. Give me a plain original 148. I found a Grant at a cb shop for 100 bucks used, peaked and tuned, no mic of course, had the side mount jack for the mic versus the front like the new 148s have. Talked to one guy about it, and he immediately turned me over to the connexs. Not saying they arent good or anything, its just not what I wanted, and he wasnt listening, lol. I walked away. Id be curious if a stinger board could be added that would work with ssb on the 148.

No can do. Work doesnt want linears in the trucks or the extra wiring a decent sized one requires. Actuallity the export radios arent allowed, so I have to pay attention when I put the truck in the shop to take it out. With going in and out of customs etc too, its just easier to get a legal radio, and maybe throw a lil heat inside it, maybe. Already have a 200gtl dx

You could always silkscreen different marking onto the radio. I've seen that done before.

I heard that the stingers will only give you about 30-50 watts max.. maby there are some others that will do more not fully sure on this.

Some one on here suggested hiding the amp some where in the truck so it cant be seen.

If you could find the original 148 like you said, would be good.
