The antenna specialist & Co. base antenna

I just picked up a brand new, box had never been open base antenna for free. It is from 1976 and the company is The antenna specialist & Co. I had never heard of it. I was wondering if any of you have and if the antenna is any good. It is a ground plane antenna. I am going to hook up a base station here at the house, thanks

Antenna specialists was a big company in the 70's and 80's. If the antenna has a coil in the base it's probably a magnum or super magnum 5/8 wave vertical. Not as good as a penetrator...but still a decent antenna.

I think i had a supermagnum back in the 80's it had 4 ground radials and 1 little loop coil like the ringo's got. If thats what you have, they work fairly well. I made my first " real " dx contact off it. 15 feet off the ground and barefoot.

Its hard for me to believe the first 2 posters have never heard of A.S. Co.
I guess things are sinking into oblivion faster than we thought Bopper. :D

It won't be long til somebody mentions our name an the same thing will be said. "Don't recall that name"

I know that it is an all aluminum ground plane antenna, i dont have the box right now, but it said base station antenna on it and on the end of it, it said 27 mhz. Thanks for the help guys

Probably a 1/4 wave ground plane or maybe a Starduster. The SuperMag is a 1/2 wave and has a red plastic sleeve 8-10" long right at the bottom of it where the coax hooks.

The antenna has three ground planes on it. I got the antenna up in the air, the top of the antenna is over 30ft off the ground. All i need to do now is run the coax in the house and hook up the radio and check my swrs ect. Wish me luck

If the radials (ground planes) are angled down on it, it is a Starduster.

The radials are angled down, are the stardusters a good antenna? I hooked up everything, swrs are flat and it is getting out, at least 50 miles, i also got it up to about 40ft. I got the general hooked up to it and everyone says that i am sounding good on there end.

In my opinion, they we're a damn good antenna. That and the Super Mag was about the only antenna's people ask for back in the early to mid 70's when I was working part time at a buddys radio shop.

Both were made by Antenna specialists and the Starduster was by far the top seller around my part of the country (K.C.MO.) back then.

Unless yer in a hole, 40 ft is plenty good enough. Get ya a good base, thats peaked an tuned, an put a good D-104 Silver Eagle desk mic on it. You'll be able to talk loud an clear about anywhere ya want within 40-50 miles or so easy. Everybody will think yer running a linear cause it'll sound so good.

I'm kinda on top of a hill where I'm at, an it is only about 30 ft to the bottom of my Maco V58 antenna. I can talk about anywhere I need to within 50-75 miles of here barefooted and be heard clear as a bell.

If I'd had a brand new AS Starduster like you, I woulda stuck it up in a minute instead of buying this antenna I got. Mind ya, theres not a thing wrong with my antenna, I just know how good them ol original AS Stardusters talk.

If it's an original starduster...you got yourself a good base antenna! Many people debate about what kind of vertical it is...some say 1/4 wave ground plane...others say 1/2 wave dipole. I ran a old starduster in the 90's and it blew smoke. Years later I moved and acquired a starduster 'clone'. It was the best skip talkin vertical that I've used. I think that three star in the middle had a lot to do with it. It seemed to talk to stations using flat sides. That's until we had a wind storm and the top was pulled off. Now I 've got this humongous maco v5/8

Glad i am hearing good things about this antenna, I am not in a "hole" but i am surrounded by trees and i would like to be able to get it up over the tree line to see if that helps out my receive a little more. I can get the truckers on the highway with is about 35miles away as a crow flies, but where i live there are alot of hills and valleys which hurt performance. Right now i am debating on what i want to run for a base mic, right now i just have a RK56, but have been getting mixed comebacks on how it sounds.

I have a pic of the original box and it says unlimited power on it. I thought you said you had the original box?
