Gotta start working on my base now. I want lottsa power. Can this be done with a straight 11 meter and an amp or must I get a modified 10 meter. Any recommendations on a radio and an amp?

Hey buddy,

You and I sure seem to think a lot alike lately. I have my eye on a SWP RCI 2995DC from RA. But I also wonder if 250-300 watts is enough with a base antenna, or if an amp will be in order. And then is there a better radio to drive a Dave Made??

I'm not gonna go there till my mobile is completed, but after that, I'll be on the phone bugging Mike again ... :) :)

You're going to run into a lot of opinions here. I've had almost every high power base made and the 2995 is hard to beat. Keep it down under 200 watts if you want it to last a long time. I've gone the other direction. I have galaxy's etc...but often run my mint Cobra 2000 with a small amp. To me...the audio quality of a well tuned 2000 (or a grant or 148 for that matter) is hard to beat...and a base amp just makes it that much better.

Bottom line for me is this: If you're going to run an amp...then why buy a high powered radio and then tune it down to run into the amp? Of course, you could always run a BIG amp with it and then you wouldn't have to tune it down.

I just co-signed 2 new car loans for both my sons in the last 3 days and I'm retiring the end of the year so I gotta take it easy. Should have the antenna and radio by the end of the summer!!! But I want a self standing tower..........free..........if I can find one!! They have them all over the place down here with tv antennas on them. They just gotta decide to go cable or satellite tv so I can snatch it up!!

Two at once? YIKES!! Been through that with my daughter a few times years ago. Now my son will be looking for wheels soon.

I have a 6' pole on the peak of my roof. It's got a scanner antenna on it now. I could probably go 8 to 10 feet above the peak with no problem, which would put the base of an antenna at about 40'. I'm also at a relatively high point so it should work pretty good. Thinking about putting an Enforcer up there to keep the neighbors happy.

That's EXACTLY how to get a free tower.........check just outside the city where they can't get cable and look around. Direct TV & Dish Network are a tower scrounger's best friend. Just sell them on the idea that you'll rid them of their "eyesore" before it A) comes crashing down, B) gets hit by lightning and burns the house down, C) helps guide aliens to land and anally probe them, D) causes blindness and/or hairloss, E) all of the above. BTW, the sons you co-signed loans for are perfect for climbing. A little WD-40 and a scissors jack, y'all good to go..... 10-fo-ah??

Do you tune and tweak the RCI 2995DX or just use it stock except for the 11 meter modification?

RA does a Super Whack Pack on it, and they tweak the power supply.

That's what I would get.
But I would love to have a RCI DX 2990 and the problem with that is the power supply is not big enough and they fixed that with the DX 2995 but it's surface mount tech which if you like to do your own mod's you can't.
Just my two since.
