Put up a forty foot rohn without a baseplate?

You can if you put it next to a building and drive stakes at the bottom so it dont kick out.

The concrete idea alot of people use. It makes the base very stiff. Make sure you support it against a building however with some strong wind load you'd not want to bend the tower, or even worse......!

Ok, thanks guys I didn't want to use concrete, because later if we move I want to take that stuff with me.

i put 2 8 foot poles 4 1/2 foot deep in the ground with concreet and put the bottom in between them and used rachet straps round the base to the poles and about 1/2 way up i ran guide wires

I have a push-up 30' pole with a A99 on top went better that I expected.

I put a 2" pipe in the ground about 3' left it sticking up about 1' filled with sand to ground level. Used guy wires at 20' and 30' with turnbuckles to tighten the guys. Worked great the A99 is the only thing moving in the wind.

Hello there. I'm late on this one, but in the past, I've driven 5'masts in the ground next to each tower leg, leaving 18 in or so sticking up and used mast-to-mast u-bolt clamps to secure the tower legs to the masts. I would only recomment doing this with the aid of the house for support, of course. -drdx
