SWRs went up when i added height to base Antenna

#65811

Post by BigC »

I just added about another 10 feet of height to my base antenna, doing this required the addition of 3 guy wires. My antenna at the very base is now 37ft above the ground, and at the top of the antenna it is 45ft. Before i put it up higher i had a dead mans match on 20, 1 and 40. Now with the antenna up higher my SWRs are a 1.1 on 20, a 1.1 on 40 and 1.4 on 1. I know this may be really insignificant, but i would like to have the dead mans match back on all 40 channels. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks

What kind of antenna are you running? Probably getting some reflection off the guy lines if they are metal. And unless you hang out down stairs, you are right...nothing wrong with those standing waves. ;)

The antenna i am running is a Antenna Specialists MC 27. Basic antenna with a ground plane. The Antenna is old, but brand new and never used. It is from 1976. The guy wires are metal and are close to the the coax at the top of the antenna. Will i have a big problem with the swrs when i put and amp on my setup? Thanks again

Here's a couple things you can consider doing that will likely help:
1.) Dump the metal guy lines and switch to rope or Kevlar type guys which are invisible to RF. (that's what I would do)
2.) Move your guys down on your masting 4'-5' or so, and invest in some insulators and break up the guys to non-resonating lengths.

Those are a couple options...but honestly, it's a 1/4 wave ground plane and I wouldn't worry about it. And it might affect your standing wave some, but alot of that will depend on how much wattage you plan on running. ;)

thanks for the replies, i have the guy wires about 2-3 ft down from the base of the antenna where it is attached to the ma sting pole, I plan on running a eastcoast 1x2 or a palomar 250, depending on which one works better, more then likely i will keep the palomar in the house and put the eastcoast in the truck. I might try to take some pics today and post them up here to show you what it looks like. What are the insulators that you are talking about? Thanks again for the help

They are just simple inexpensive egg insulators...they can be found on ebay or most electrical outlets. I'm not sure if any of the sponsors here might carry them or not...but they aren't that expensive.
