Looking for a new wattmeter / SWR something reliable!

#72148

Post by LYVWIRE#61 »

I want to purchase a new SWR/ Wattmeter. I have owned 4 or 5 and have been disappointed in them all. They will not stay calibrated. Truthfully , I don't haul them around with me to keep them from bouncing around but, When I pull the meter out to do a check , the swing and watts are NEVER correct unless I go by my friend's shop to re- calibrate it . ANY SUGGESTIONS ?????

Yea thats kinda what i was thinkin but they are too stingy for me
They really read what your doin they dont let you feel good about your setup
like the other meters do. I have a BIRD at the house right now in immaculant
condition but the biggest slug i have for it is 2500 :?

hey lyvwire, i feel your pain about meters. i got all diferent kinds of them and they all read something different. if i check the standing wave in one of my mobles or when im setting up a entenna ill use a couple diferent meters. if they both tell me close to the same thing , then i figure tm pretty close. i got a little heathkit swr/watt meter i got off ebay and it works ok. i bought mfj 868 meter and its pretty good. im waiting on a new old stock yeasu y-60 swr/watt meter i bought from a guy. so,yah the bird meters are the best. TO STINGY HUH DUCK COMANDER. :D A HONEST ANSWER AT LEAST. :D

Yeah busman, I own 2 rat sha*k meters , one old palomar , a gold line , and a doosy TR1000 and the doosy usually works the best but , must be calibrated regularly , is this normal ??? The doosy SWR is pretty good , the modulation is OK but, the power is where the problem is .

I run an Ameritron AM35. It is a 3kw cross-needle with remote sensor style with a nice light and peak/avg button. It was 149.00 at HRO. It works and looks nice and comes with a 25 ft cord. That peak button is there for when you want to feel good. The meter box itself is nice and flat. I have mine velcro'd to the dash and it is easy to remove when not in use. -drdx

a bulldog meter is a great meter I have a friend thats got 2 of them and paid a hefty price for each. not to mention their becoming a very rare dog to find..When setting up a system i use my Bird but as for keeping a eyeball on it I depend on a Dosy tr1000 and use a Dosy TC4002PSW in the radio room of the house..

Thanks for all the responses guys ! Graywolf , I have a Dosy TR1000 myself mine works OK on SWR & modulation it gives a reasonable reading here but, the watts are not reading correctly at all now . I sent it to the factory about 5 years ago to have it calibrated , but I guess it needs recalibation again. Wolf have you ever had yours calibrated & can it be done OK by a local tech??

Bird. Coaxial Dynamics.... or if you want to make things
really interesting, get one of these:

[Please login or register to view this link]

Cool thing about this thing is you can set it up inline as a sequence inhibitor if
the SWR goes bad on your antenna suddenly because of something dying/breaking... might
save your amp/radio.

The problem with getting something accurate is it always seems to cost a good chunk of
change, no ifs ands or buts about it.
