Anyone do a Base vs. mobile keydown?
I remember when I had my 1x4 in the car goin, I was equal to my buddy with a 5/8 ground plane @ 70 feet at the base with about like 50 watts.
Has anyone done any keydowns, and how did you do?

I have on a ton of different occasions, more than I could list..
300 watts on a 2x2290 box on an imax @ 70 ft to the base still keys out a 2x8 x-force mobile with predator 10k antenna 200 feet up the street at 25' higher elevation.
400-500 watts on a 2x2879 base box @ 18 volts @ 800 ft elevation, i10k * 80 ft for total elevation of 880 ft, will run dead even with a 2x4 davemade on a predator 10k w/ 22" shaft @ 935ft.
It's all about the location. A 100kw suburban sitting down in a hole is gonna get destroyed by a 1000 watt base once you get out into the distance. Likewise, a crummy base station deep down in a hole, will get destroyed by a mobile on a hill with lesser watts.
You can also get taken out due to obstruction to a certain person.. like if you shootout a base station vs a mobile, and the mobile is a few hundred feet away, it might not be obstructed by a large hill in the line of sight of the base.
For instance, I used to take out folks to one side of town, but on the other, I had a slight incline that used to mess me up.
In any event, I have performed tons of shootouts in tons of different scenario's as we have a huge gathering of guys on channel 13, and we shootout frequently.
Peace,
Josh

Yep.. I used to get ate up by bases on my base adjacent to me.. I'd be running a 16 pill on my base, and this guy with a 6 pill just 80 ft higher than me used to tear me up in all directions once you got more than 5 miles out.
Elevation is everything for groundwave communications.
Skip is a completely different story.

in my little area here there's about 20 bases within a 3 mile radias. in that radias about 4 of them are within a 1/4 mile of me. with my imax at 70 ft to the tip of the antenna i can walk over all 4 of those bases with my klv1000 running in the medium position (about 700 watts). 2 guys have moonraker 4's. the one i really enjoy messing with (i don't mess with the others...they're friends) has an imax at about 20 ft off the ground at the base, running a davemade 8 pill, and he tries to walk on everyone around so when i hear him i'll just key up on him, lol. it's what dude deserves for intentionally trying to walk on the other bases directly in our area. on high power, i don't think there's a base near me that can walk on me. as far as mobiles, i do get the occasional (about once a month) jerk that will sit right down the road and throw deadkeys trying to plug my ears, but there's no competition....my signal is just so higher. i can usually get over their deadkey barefoot. i don't know if they're running power, but i assume they are if they're trying to screw with me. i've also been sitting in down about 2 miles away and been talking to my wife with her on my base and me in my mobile and hear someone key up next to me and she still drowns them out, so i guess it's doing the deal.

drdx: it is a blast, lol. only time it gets annoying is when you actually are trying to talk to someone. i talk on 27.6050 so bleedover for me isn't too terrible.
bart: i'm sure in distance and dxing the moonrakers pound me, but talking locally i can walk the dog on them.
i don't intentionally walk on people...they're all pretty darn good guys, and i want to stay friends with all them so we can all get along, lol. i like my bleed stick

I never did key down competitions but I talked to a guy running like 5 watt dead key and it was a base from 30 miles. I had a 3 pill amp at 50 percent hitting him from a mobile. When I would shut off the truck he lost touch with me. So I figure I was running 200-300 watts to hit him from the same distance.
5 Watts base at 75 ft antenna
300 Watt mobile with a 59 inch antenna.
