Looking for a Base...

#91175

Post by Slim Jim »

Hello, I'm new to the forum. However, I've been studying this forum for a while now! Anyway, I'm looking for a decent base radio (for local talk, mostly). Preferably, I need one that doesn't require too much "tweaking", I live about 70 miles from the nearest radio shop...I need one that is "plug-and-play", I guess. If it's a 10 meter base, I could probably convert the frequencies myself. I've considered the General Jackson, RCI 2980wx, RCI 2995, Galaxy 2517, etc...Also, which base stations are equivalent to each other? I know some of them are built utilizing the same board, chassis, etc...Anyway, if y'all have any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate them, along with any "pros and cons" as well! Thanks again, and it's great to finally be a member here!

I was sort of leaning towards something a little newer...SSB would be nice, but I plan on using it mainly for AM.

for sideband if you want a newer radio I would suggest a 10 meter radio that is modded to cover cb freqs. if you want to run a mobile with a power supply rci 2950 or rci 2970 would be good choices. base radios I have had rci 2980dx and rci 2995dx both did great for me. just my .02 cents.

73's and good luck on getting your base

How difficult is it to convert the 2995 to cover the cb frequencies? I've heard they consist of a slightly more sophisticated board...I may have heard wrong, but was just wondering if it was as simple as removing the resistors like in most other radios...

I would suggest that you include ssb on the radio you buy, down the road you will probably want to talk ssb and would have to purchase another radio, so on your purchase take the best of two worlds ssb and am...

the RCI radios use SMT (surface mount technology) and you need a real tech to work on them . SMT is much more resistant to damage from vibration........but theyre are many older radios still running that use more conventional technology that have never had vibration problems . SMT is the current next step in radio construction though . tubes, transistors, integrated circuits, MOS-FETs, SMT,?????? whats next ?
pretty much any radio you buy from a sponsor here can be "setup" for you so itll be "plug and play" when you get it .
just remember no radio is any better than the combined efficency of the antenna , ground and coax .
good luck and welcome to the forum . :)
