pic updates
i just got some copper pipe from a house install and few ground rods
so I'm doing something with my spare time
thought it would be neat to be able to turn on water sprinklers and water my grounds
when you can pump 2,500 watts (low side)out the house and neighbors not complain then something must be going right

what happens to solder when it tries to handle the effects of a lightning strike ? is the rosen used to prepare the pipe connections also a good electrical conductor ? i would never have thought that burying soldered plumbing pipe a few inches into dirt could have anywhere near the grounding capability of a 8 foot copper rod pounded into the ground . i guess im still not to old to learn .

on each leg coming off the tower is a 8 foot ground rod
then on each corner in the yard is a 8 foot ground rod
then at each intersection in the middle is a 4 foot ground rod.
just by hooking not even half of it up yet i can already hear alot better and I'm able to hear few mobiles talking 40 miles away that i couldn't hear before.
so what gives??????????/
its just something for me to play around with

i guess i just have such a low income that i hate to see good equipment put at risk by someone playing around with equipment that is supposed to protect it that was never designed to do it and every reputable publication suggest against . but its not mine and i apologize .
p.s the reason youre able to hear and maybe talk farther is not because the pipe is adding proper ground...its because of....well...dont take my word for it

read the 5th paragraph . i believe all that coppper pipe in the ground is giving you a similar effect with your beam .
sometimes i can be a lil bull headed or even anal . ill try to be less opinionated . thats a wonderfull tower/antenna set up you have . im envious .

this is what this forum is about , i take no offense to the replies
i just try to share my pics when i can and help anyone else out
just like my suburban its done theres no fun in it no more
i can try and talk skip on the base when it get tough i go to the mobile to do some cutting lips
I've spent years on this burban to get it where its at now grounding and more grounding and then some more grounding
so I'm thinking one day hey i got some copper pipe and some ground rods i got off the old houses location to be torn down and also some extras on the side from building house running copper pipes and grounds
so i just doing it to do something and to share what i got going on
that some good reading on SE.
that's what i did on a ground plane few years back
had a 60 footer tower with P-500 on top
on each ground radial i ran 4 gauge copper wire to the ground rod and i had 4 - 50 foot copper ground wires just under the ground
and i had the sprinkler mounted about 15 feet up inside the tower and it kept the entire area wet
and noise level to a point where i thought my coax was not hooked up.
its all about trying things out
if it works it works and so far its doing wonders better than it was
if i sounded offended in no way was i trying to
my apologies
we are all here to have a good time and enjoy what we do best

ground rods on each side on each leg of tower
then soldered to the T connector going out to 10 foot of copper pipe
then below T connector is the 8 foot ground rods

Good! so it cleaned up your receive, so you can hear weaker stations now?North Texas Mudduck wrote:<snip> and i had the sprinkler mounted about 15 feet up inside the tower and it kept the entire area wet

It reminds me of using corona balls on the tips of mobile antennas, anybody use those?
Keep in mind that static is caused by both man-made and natural sources. But i believe what you are doing is draining the static build-up on your antenna and tower.
When the sun spots start up again, the background noise from skip will pick up and the static will become insignificant by comparison.
Also, be aware of c0pper corrosion. Over the years, if your soil is acidic, it might be an issue. Just take a look at the Statue of Liberty.
