Base Station Microphone

#97333

Post by Red Warrior »

I know this has been asked before but I could not find a thread.

I have a Galaxy 95T and I want to add a stand microphone. I want voice to be full range and dynamic. I will run the audio through a preamp for compression if necessary.

Any recommendations? New or used doesn't matter.

Astatic D104 is a good mic, but for compression look at a used Turner plus 3, they are loud and have a speech compressor in them, plus 3B is a 6 wire mic, if needed

I will toss the Astatic 1104C into the mix here, desktop version of Astatic 575M6. Has both tone and volume controls.

i agree the turner +3 is a good choice,i like the the compressor , it doesnt activate until you speak loudly, whereas the turner expander 500 seems like the compressor is on all the time, even backround noise. my custom mic on the left over there has a turner +3 base with an astatic element ,shure 55 head. but for full tone (or any tone) i dont think u can beat the 1104c. im a skinny guy (135 lbs!) and that mic can make me sound big, lol. all the tone settings sound good. the treble setting will shear thru noise and boomy radios like a sword, the bass setting will bomb thru skinny sounding radios. most eqpt. with adjustments sounds really good adjusted one way. the astatic 1104c sounds good many ways. thats unusual and attests to why they are so expensive on ebay.. the other choice is the d-104's. excellent in every respect, bass mids and treble, but it seems all the elements do not have good consistancy, they sound different, its the good ones i mentioned earlier that stand out in the crowd. take that with a grain of salt though, i have had 5 of them, but they were all used, never had a new one to compare to. in my book, the astatic would win for tone/sound. 209

I like the D-104's! I bought my Night Eagle from Mike all rebuilt and I like it. I have my Silver Eagle on line now. I switch back and fourth from Black to Silver Eagles. Here is a photo of the Silver Eagle in front of the RCI-2980wx.

For a straight up made for CB base mic the Astatic EchoMax 2000 will always get my vote.Hands down the best base mic I've ever used. But there not cheap.

I always wanted to try the Astatic 1104C but have not had the chance yet.

You could take the next step and get a studio quality mic like a Audio technica AT 2020 or a Behringer B1.

JCD 201M is awesome. It gets great reports on audio and clarity. It takes some fine tuning, just like any variable desk mike, but once its tuned in it sounds great. The compression circuitry in the mic is a great feature. No matter what audio level you put into the mic it will not let you over modulate. In my opinion, for the price it is an excellent microphone, and to top it off it looks nice too.

Those base mics are getting a bit hard to find anymore, aren't they? Are they still being made? I know the 575M6 is obsolete. This is the mic I use with compression and a mixer. 100 bucks new but needs phantom voltage. Mike

Wazzup AK295,

That JCD-201M is an interesting mic, for sure, and have read numerous positives and few negs. Have not used one yet but have always run compression in one form or another. Tell me a little more about the mic, will ya. Positives and/or negatives and what is taking getting used to as I am considering one.

Thanks, Mike

I use a Silver Eagle for AM talk and a Turner Super Sidekick for SSB. Astatic 575M6 in the truck. Each has it's place. I'm not too fond of D104's on sideband because they have such a harsh sound when they're not adjusted right. Turner 3's have good full-bodied modulation to me, with a pleasant, deep tone.

I've been using the Galaxy Echo mic and like it a lotl just switched to the JCD-201M and think I like it more... great reports so far... only negative (for me) is it came with a straight mic cord; gets in the way on the desk; I won't complain about the performance though!!!

hey Causmik, i have no negatives about that JCD mic. Just getting it set right for each radio you put it on takes a few tries. Been one heck of a mic so far and i love it.
