Lucky dog. My buddy used to have a Cam 88. That thing had deep bass and mucho audio. Something was wrong with it as it would lose receive suddenly. If I remember right, if he wiggled the channel select knob it would come back sometimes. I think there was something else wrong though. Perhaps a receive tube or something. I'd love to have a good working 88 if I had a base set up. Apartments suck!!TwentyTwo-Zero wrote:I have a Siltronix 1011C, Yaesu FT101E, Tram D201A & Cobra Cam88 packed away in the closet. Mine would do the same thing sometimes, but a shot of TV Tuner Cleaner and a couple of spins around the band seems to clean it right up.crazytruker wrote:Something was wrong with it as it would lose receive suddenly. In the 70's my dad and I had a Palomar 300 base and in the early 90's I had a sonar driver. Well I used it as a driver to push a heath kit 220. I notice PA629 has a heath kit 220. If you ever want to sell let me know. They rock hard. I with I would have never sold it. If you get your hands on something like that don't let it go. Take it from a fool.

Re: how many of yous have ran tube equpment?
I cut my teeth on a Siltronix 1011 D. Thats what I learned SSB on and then traded my Peavy Foundation bass and Peavy TKO-60 amp for a 60 ft tower, ham-4 rotor, D&A MDX-200, Moonraker 4, and two 100ft runs of RG-8. Greatest trade I ever made. Since then I've had a Kris 125, Kris mach 3B, Siltronix LA-600( to bad I didn't have it when I had the 1011D) and now have a MaCo 300 and some kind of 1 tube modulator......385 PS...Real Radios Glow In The Dark!

Re: how many of yous have ran tube equpment?
I have owned a few before trading or selling them. I never had one die, maybe a tune-up on a few. I need to admit I have really been blessed with some great tube transceivers. The Drake was my favorite.
Lafayette Comstat 23 Mark V, Comstat 35, HB 111, Yaesu FT DX 560 & 101 E, Drake T4XC & R4C (I loved the blue lights), Tempo xx, Hallicrafters xx, Browning Golden eagle, Clegg 22er, Collins 7xx & Heathkit xx.
The largest transmitter I have ever been around was an AM transmitter. It was a million of watts on AM - Talk about SWING. That was back in the late 70's in England. I don't remember what it was called, all I can tell you is that it was HUGE and I believe it used waveguide technology.
It’s been years since I thought about these. Thanks for the reminder.
For you young guys, Take pictures of all the equipment you have. Later on in life you might want to look back on them.

just bought my first radio w/tube finals a nice old yaesu ft101ex can anyone recomend max power to put into my maco 300 2 8950's driving 5 8950's the tubes test out lk new and i dont want to screw em up most i ever put into the box was about 25 or 30 watts and the box made big quality audio
Re: how many of yous have ran tube equpment?
The only tube type radio equipment I still have is an amplifier. It uses a real-live amplifier tube, not sweep tubes, eg.
The biggest draw-back to tube type equipment is finding the tubes, they just are not as 'dirt' common as they used to be. While it depends on the particular tube radio, they were certainly comparable to most solid-state radios. Of course there are differences in performance, but not really all that much (with a good one). Solid-state radios are more convenient, easier to use. (And cooler in the summer!!)

Have an old d&a phantom, never had a tube radio yet. I really would like a nice big old tram or browning sometime though.
