Rev,

These are good radios. The receiver is solid state and the transmitter uses three tubes.

A little more work to use than a modern radio, but should serve you well.

If it has 11mtrs 27mhz crystals inside then you have a very powerfull and great sounding rig for CB, and HF too..
old sets, but with valves have a very clean output and upto and sometime over 100w is easy..

one of my main questions is why spend $200 to $400 on a CB when you can buy quality amateur radios for the same or less..!!

I only use Kenwood amateur sets here on CB, and you can not get better than the best.!!
I want to die asleep like my grandad did,
Unlike his passengers, Screaming and shouting.!!

520 is a great rig, though I know nothing of getting on 11meters if it already isn't. If you got it from another CBer, make sure a golden screwdriver didn't get let loose under the lid.

google the kenwood 520 and youll get all the info you need. i did it on a ts-430 kenwood. all kinds of info out there. the kenwoods do make good cb. they have broadcast sound and are built like a tank. they dont have all the toys such as echo and talkback but, oh well. nice radios though.

I have a Kenwood 530. It is the same as the 520 inside. The only difference is 520 is analog frequency and 530 is digital. does 120 watts pep with two JAN 6146 tubes. Haven't used mine in a while, but I believe they go down to about 27.700 or so. So you could free band with it. No AM so you are done there. I do believe you can streach the oscillator down some by changing its reference crystal. Best to get a Good tech for that.

The TS-520/530 are good radios. It kind of limits you though as far as CB is concerned.

I'm thinking about acquiring a Kenwood TS-830S. Now THAT is a good SSB radio. If you want a good AM and SSB radio, the way to go is the Yaesu FT-101E.

I had a 520 SE a little bit newer but the same circuit if you
want to modify it for 11 meters change crystals
36.895 to 35.895
37.395 to 36.395
37.995 to 36.995
It will give you coverage from 27.000 to 28.100
Thats all you have to do. Tune as normal no other mods needed.
If you want to go below 27.000 put in a 35.395 crystal.
Here is a link for the manual and schematic.
