Vintage Sony 9 Transistor Shortwave Radio Model TR-911 No RX

Hey people,

I picked up a cheap (5 bucks) Sony Shortwave radio as a backup to my Eton which I keep at work, and I was surprised to find that there was NO receive! (DOH!!!)

When I put batteries in it, the battery meter moves, the light comes on when I activate it, but all I hear is VERY quiet static, even on full volume! However, when I opened it up, it had 3 screw terminals marked IN, OUT and GND. Touching an antenna wire to IN/OUT causes VERY LOUD static but it is momentary and no signal is received, even when I have a major AM radio station's towers less than 4 miles away!

I get nothing on SW or AM. Even without a telescoping antenna, it should still pick up AM with the ferrite bar inside, but no dice. Its a neat looking radio from the era when things were made solid and of metal. Any ideas what might be wrong? It looks pretty easy to work on, nothing is shoved into a tight case and there are no panels hiding the components. Any tips will be appreciated, as long as it doesn't involve throwing it in the garbage! I will be the sole decider in its fate, and when I have finally exhausted all options in trying to repair it, it will be dropped off a 4 story parking garage in an undisclosed location. Thanks.
