RF Power Puck and 55 install / 10K COMP UPDATE

#135168

Post by OL-3-TOE »

Well here we go my new antenna and mount are finally installed.
I did alot of research and ask for advice from a few of the more than helpful members here on the forum.
The mount I use was the 4" Puck mount from RF Power, I also used their 5" backup plate for the inside.
The shipment was fast and I had the mount and plate in about 4 days. I do metal work myself and would have to say
the quality is OUTSTANDING and FLAWLESS.
I ordered my antenna from ChargerCharger it is the 55 antenna 4 wrap coil.
I completed the connection with 18' of 217u coax.
The install was a snap the hardest part was centering the hole to drill in the roof.
The Puck and Plate make a nice solid mount for some of the bigger antenna. The 55 is right at 86" tall from the mount to the tip of the stinger.
My main worry was setting the swr. I started at the half way point with the stinger only mid way in the shaft. My first readings were
CHL 1 ( 1.0 ) CHL 20 ( 1.0 ) and CHL 40 ( 1.0 ) . I thought that the install was wrong and double checked all my connections and made sure I had a good
ground. All checked good and the readings stayed the same. I didn't have to adjust the swr at all. Sweeeeet!!

My first radio check came from 60 miles away and said I was blow-in smoke.
I could not be happier with the out come.

Thanks for all the advice and shopping tips.
This forum ROCKS.

Nice install!! I have a few questions. Did all that hardware come with the mount? What connectors can you get with that 217 coax? Who makes 217? How about that amp? 6 pill? Great looking set-up!!

80mm,you have to supply the 4 allens for mounting the puck but they are cheap. i used stainless allens on mine. all my 217 coax has on it is 217 nemal, it uses speical(spelling i know) 259 type connectors for the radio end and lugs for teh mount end. i use 217 thruout my mobile. its great stuff...jas

I'm scared to ask how much those connectors are?? What do they cost? Can you get a direct to PL-259 or do you have to go to N first then adapt to PL-259? How about installing the connectors on that cable? Do you need special tools? Where can I find the specs on it? Is it that much better than LMR-600?

Looking good! A nice clean install for sure.

Thanks for the info on the RF Power pucks. I looked at their website and they have great prices. I would think the aluminum scrap would be worth more than their selling that thing for. Really nice looking setup.

Triple7wva has given me alot of good advice and you can see from my install it was well worth it.
Thanks again Trip.

Thanks for the comments y'all.
I'm hooked and looking at some more upgrades.
A work in progress. Alternator, batteries, bigger box. This project is the result of inputs from y'all on this site.
I will do more updates as I upgrade.

Thanks

That's really great. Bet you're proud of the outcome.

When I grow up I want to have a set-up like OL-3-TOE's.
