I Have researched these in the Past and for 60.00 shipped, I think it is a good little portable to mess with if
you want to listen to some SSB/Shortwave now using a low Budget.
It has an external Antenna jack so you can use a long wire I believe....
Compared to higher end rigs it does not compare because it is what it is...
They are the first Cheap SSB unit from China I believe.

You might want to consider checking - ETON GRUNDIG E5 too...they been around for a while.

I seen no replys but felt I should answer Because I checked these out also..
I havn't got one it yet but still considering one. Good luck..

163AT,

I picked up a copy of Passport to World Band Radio about 6-7 months ago, and I think you'd be much better off with the Eton E5. Although its a little bit more money, I own one and its a nice little radio for the money. If I am not mistaken the E5 is made by Degen too...The lower-priced Degens you have to watch out for, but if you get one with SSB, it might not be too bad.

If you can drop 150$, I HIGHLY recommend a Sony SW7600, I think the model number is. It is one of the few radios still made in Japan, and the quality shows. And it does AWESOME on SSB. Just a few suggestions, good luck!

I love my Degen 1103. Eton should be the same radio, no need to pay more. I used a 100 foot longwire attached to 100 feet of coax (Where the longwire and coax met, I had grounded the coax shield). It worked great. You really should use an external antenna if you want best results while inside. Mine came with a 20' or so antenna, which definitely helped while inside. While outside, the antenna on the unit worked pretty good.

There's a fairly active user group for the Degen as well, with all kinds of mods. When I made my purchase, I read all kinds of reviews and comparisons with other radios, and it seemed like you wouldn't gain much, if anything, until you started spending $500.
