Older Johnson Viking Messenger: NO SO-239 Connector!

Post by Jester »

Hi Guys,

I picked up an older Johnson Messenger (Viking Whiteface) the other day and I noticed that it doesn't have an antenna receptacle for a PL-259! What gives, man?

It appears that it has a deep tube-like hole on the back with a small center hole inside of it....Does anyone know what this is, and how I can use my standard coax in conjunction with the hole? Any info is appreciated, thanks!

Maybe an old Motorola banana jack? If so, you can probably find an adapter at mouser or altex, if not from a sponsor. -drdx

Yep, you need a PL-259 to Motorola adapter like this:

Funny you mention that, I was cleaning out my trunk of my car and I found one attached to a backup mobile antenna: I'll attach it as soon as I get home, thanks!

Excellent! Glad to hear it's on the air! The low audio may be due to weak tube(s) in the audio amplifier or output section. If you don't have one, the factory service manual is available at cbtricks... Great to hear that another "Big Ole Johnson" has made it's way back to the air waves!

The Breadbox is ON THE AIR!!!!!

I have to hunt down some tubes, but I am sure that they will not be too hard to find. I mean, hell, the radio is between 45 and 50 yrs old!

Big Johnson!!!!!!
