Youll love that new 2517.I had one and sold it to put exhast on a race car that i dont even have anymore. So i dont have the radio or the car.I think if i ever can get the $ to get enother one im gonna go for a 2980wx.Not saying thats what u should have done or anything cuz i thought the 2517 was a excellent radio. Garnerz is right,a good D104 would make it sound choice. After the base ant is up with some good coax ill give it about a month and youll be lookin for that monster amp to run behind it.(Or at least thats about how long it would take for me ).

Good to see the new stations going up. I just had to take down my station. We have an association where I live. Tried everything in the book to hide the antenna, but no luck. Hard to hide an I-MAX.
So here I sit and look at my DX2527, Silver Eagle, antenna and push-up pole wishing I could key. Don't much like sitting in the truck outside all the time. Good luck on the base station.

oh yeah, pics will be posted. Hey bolt cutter aint ya got a tree you can turn into an antenna. Seems i seen a pretty good post on here with one. dont just give up brother. I got a lot of work to do, i'm building a custom enclosure with fans to hold the 2517 and a pyramid 52 amp power supply for future use. I will be sure to post many pics.....

Well I got the radio plugged in today and ran a 75' length of rg-8 (thats all my local shop had, seems heavy enough 95% shielding). here is the funny part, due to the weather I still havent been able to stand the tower, soooo I got a 5' tripod with a 10' piece of 1 1/4" aluminum conduit and put the old I-max on it, then staked it down with 14" long 3/8" diameter spikes... Temporary but seems to work ok. SWR's were about 1.3 across the band. Is that low enough? Today I plan to move a bench into my "Man Cave" as my wife calls it and then I will post a couple of pics. I'm already thinking about an external speaker because the audio isn't very clear on the stock speaker. Then I will start on the enclosure...... A guy is trying to sell me a Palomar 35A linear/power supply that he says swings 400 watts but I have never heard of it. It is very clean and he only wants $300 for it. What do you'all think?

mistman, 1.3 swr isnt to bad. good enough. it might get better once you get the antenna up. my imax 2000 is about 1.2 across the band. glad to hear your up and running. try a astatic d104 night eagle. my favorite. even a astatic 575 m6. hand mic. mike at radio active was sellin some to. i got a rci 2980 and i run one of the new fat boy ab1 base amps on it. puts out about 700 watts, but i run it at 500 watts. good little amp. or find you one of the old palomar skipper amps. just a idea. good luck.

Hey Darin, it looks like you're off to a great start on your "man cave". The D104 is a great mic - I have a few myself - but you may want to check into the Pryme PMC-200 microphone. It has built in compression and graphic equalizer. They are marketed towards the amateur radio enthusiast, but can be wired to work with CB radios as well. You can pick up a new mic and cord for about $150 or so - about the same price you'll pay for a D104 in excellent condition.
Looking at your pictures I have a couple suggestions: When you permanently mount your antenna I would leave a little more slack at the feed point (where the coax threads onto the antenna) so you don't put undo strain on the connector. If possible, I would also reroute the coax so it isn't running right beside the electrical wires in the same conduit as it appears to be now. You may pick up unwanted static in your receive the way it is now, and possibly have RFI issues. Lookin' good - can't wait to see it when completed! Good luck!

you know now that you mention it, I do seem to get a little high pitch static on some channels but not all. I was wondering about running the coax along side the ac cables but thought I would try it. Good suggestion on the slack at the input, didn't think of that either. I always enjoy the feedback I get on this site. I cant wait to get that baby in the air a ways and see if I can do some serious talkin'
thanks
Darin
thanks
Darin

thanks for the compliment there bolt cutter. Shoot I wouldnt have a clue about a beam. I have 24 Acres of flat ground and my house sets up on a hill. I was gonna put the antenna down at the barn but talked the wife into lettin me put it up by the house When I get it on the tower it will be the highest point for at least a quarter mile. Maybe I can hear some skip then......lol

Got my base hinge finished and the paint is dry on the tower "stand-out" that I fabricated. All I have left to do now is anchor the hinge and stand it up. I think I have decided to paint the tower first so that will set me back a couple of days. Here are some PICS.
