A lot of us started out on walkie-talkies, mobile radios that doubled as our base, etc. Just remember that even the best radio won't perform well without a good antenna system. Getting a tower was a smart move. As long as your radio is doing what you want it to do I wouldn't worry about upgrading it right away. Instead, you may want to consider upgrading to a 5/8 wave antenna (the A99 is 1/2 wave) or maybe even a beam. Then, if you want think about upgrading your radio. Enjoy the hobby - it's a lot of fun! :)

Ive always been interested in this kind of stuff. my grandpa used to be a ham operator and loved this hobby. i guess i just got that trait from him. :D i might get different antennas, especially a beam for skip. I'm getting addicted to this hobby already!
