RCI-2995DX have a fan?
I recently bought a refurbished 2995DX and also purchased a new one. I just wanted to know if the newer ones have a built in internal fan? If so, should I also attach the external fan, or is the internal one fine? Also everytime I key up on the new 2995DX it sounds like the fan accelerates, is this normal?

lmao...yeah, I thought the same thing the first time I keyed up my (newer model) 2995dx. Sounds kinda like a jet engine or something spinning up. I have the external fan kit on my older model, and plan on putting one on the newer model as well. I like the internal fan idea, but they didn't put any vent holes in the sides of the radio so it will circulate fresh air.

I have good luck quieting fans by reducing their run voltage down to 8 volts. They are simple shaded pole motors and are freely variable with voltage over their overall specified range. The ones I've done move plenty of air make about 75% less noise than running at 12 or 13.8 volts. I use a common 1-5 amp 7808 style voltage regulator transistor. Cost a dollar or less. Three pins, easy to solder wire onto, attach transistor to a little matching finned heat sink, then wire into the fan circuit. Same could be done with the internal fan.
Anyway, good luck

The external fan on my older model is quiet as a mouse - especially compared to the internal fan design on my newer model. If the fan has been on the radio for any amount of time it may be that some dust/dirt has accumulated on the fan blades. Try removing the fan and cleaning it. I have found this to be the cause of loud fans on several PCs. Once the fan was cleaned they were quiet again.nepaaircomms wrote:What did you do to the external fan to make it quieter? DX_Monkey might have a fix for it as well. You could purchase an 8v (or adjustable) regulator and mount it inside the radio and wire it so that the 12v RCA jack on the back of the radio would supply 8v for the fan connection. If you do I reccomend using a heat sink and a heat sink compound when mounting it to prevent premature failure do to heat buildup.
