base and computer
Is there a rule of thumb on how far apart a computer and the radio should be. I want to put every thing on a shelf above the computer monitor or should I put it on the other side of the room. it will be dx959 power supply and an amp later. all I need is coax I have a Mobile fire stick will this work or should I just spend the money for a Imax 2000. One more thing will this inter fear will direct tv.

I have my Cobra 26 and power supply about six inches from my computer monitor, and about a foot and a half from the computer itself (gotta be able to play on CBRT and tx/rx at the same time ya know.......), and it causes no problems whatsoever. I don't have an amp either, but my coax exits the area along with all the wires from the computer, monitor, modem, speakers, and all that, and it's fine.
As far as using a mobile antenna for a base, I wouldn't recommend it. You're gonna need a large metal object to use as a ground plane, and it's liable to be a nightmare trying to get the SWR's right. Even if you do, it's not gonna get out anywhere near as good as a good base antenna will. Imax, or A-99, either can be had for not too much money (less than a lot of radios these days), and is money well spent when doing a base station.
Hope this helps.

My CB picked up a TON of noise from my computer when I set it up
so I could key it while at my computer desk.
It didn't pick up any noise when it was in the opposite corner of the room.
I do use dual CRT (not LCD) monitors. Most, but not all, of the noise came from the monitors.
While you won't get the performance of a 5/8 wave Imax from a firestick,
I am a fan of easy, fast and cheap.
I get a good enough ground just planting a magmount antenna on an air conditioner.
I also got a mount that attaches to the ventpipe on the sewer drain on the roof.
You may get performance equal to or better than with the same antenna on your vehicle.

It's probably due to different brands of monitors, and the monitor not having a choke on the line between the monitor and the computer. Some cheaper CRT and LCD monitors are not equipped with those devices. If a computer manufacturer sees that most of the general public doesn't need it, then they'll scrap what they can to save a buck.
I keep my CB/Ham equipment inches from my computer monitor, with no problems at all.
