Range from balcony
Range from balcony
After some questionable characters broke into my car and messed it all up, I brought my Wilson mag mount and stuck it to my metal balcony on the 17th floor.
What kind of range should I be getting with this altitude, and is the 100W amp gonna make a good difference? I'm guessing I'll only be able to get this one side of the building, but that would still be cool.
PC68xl super modulated, RM italy KL-203 amp (can't use the amp yet cause still waiting on shipment of jumper cable )

Sorry about the car dude. I'm with small truck on the interferance issure. The 5000 was made to ground place off a vehicle sized piece of metal. hard to find that 17 stories up. There are antennas like the diepole which work well in small spaces. Can you run an antenna up higher out the balcony like an Antron A-99 or are you just trying to make use of what you have but not in the vehicle?
bang on both counts. my neighbours didn't complain but I saw how it tore apart my own TV signal using the X-200, on the 100watter it was manageable. SWRs were terrible at first, I managed to get it down to 1.5-2. I have seen some 'balcony' made antennas that come with this extender to get the antenna a little farther out. I wish I was on the Penthouse because in this building they could moutn right on the roof!SmallTruckBigRadio wrote:herbman,
I would expect that you might get some very bad SWR's and some very mad neighbors, because of interference.
Definatley the lil' wil or any shortened antenna is no good here. maybe when I get some more money I can invest in a proper antenna for this
This thread is also very old, since then I've put my mobile back in my car w/ the X-200 and got a trc-850 to run as the base upstairs.
Should have kept it on the balcony if you got the SWR even lower, I would have given you a shout, you can probably get clear across the city from the 17th floor!
It was rumored that Julian (Come on Come on) was somewhere near 100 spadina on the roof of a 24 floor apartment building. He was running everything 'legally' and with a bad antenna/radio you could hear him at the very least 10km in any direction, with a good antenna you were getting at least 18km, I have been able to hear him as much as 30km from 100 spadina! With that range people on the 400 would start picking him up around Kirby Rd, 19th Ave and 404, Whites Rd & 401, Derry Rd & 401 and across the border line over L.Ontario into NY State.
With 100 watts... man you would talking to the guys in NY state on the S.shore of L.Ontario noooo problem, you would be within visual LOS. You could probably hit the guys on I-90 too. You probably would not get past hwy 9 in Ontario due to terrain. Toronto sort of sits in a low spot (almost like a bowl) so your northern range is limited.
As far as skip goes... when the skip s rolling you will get out like a champ, 100's of km's would be easy (60's of miles LOL) and when things are hot you could probably pick off Mexico with ease.

Yeah I forgot to mention, if you are mobile, skip is not rolling but want to get out really well there are a few places in Southern Ontario that are always good.
Dundalk on hwy Hwy 10 is one of the high points. From up there with 100 watts you will have a range of 100 - 150 km in any direction. Blue Mountains area is also good, there are a few roads which cross the escarpment before it turns into ski terrain and is off limits. From up there you should be able to get into downtown Toronto, the escarpment area near the Hamilton Airport is also awesome, not so good for western coverage but you will blast across the east. Sometimes you will get guys from Belleville, Kingston & Watertown coming in.

silentbob, funny you mention those high-point locations I've been to most of them in my mobile already and even talked to puerto rico from a high point up in Caledon.
as for the balcony i'm definatley getting a better antenna because even with the crappy lil' wil i was getting out beyond hamilton but couldn't hear replies. maybe a 102" SS whip would be most economical
//EDIT talking between my mobile and base I commonly get around 30-40km range i.e from toronto to caledon

hey good to see some other locals here......I am just getting back in to radios since the late 80's early 90's........I think we all know Julious...I remember him on channel 10 AM.....I used to be on the 26th flooor at yonge and egg....and had my k40 out the window.......I could tlk to buffalo at like 4-5 s units on the am side.....was great.....now I am on the 22 floor near scarborough town center......but have now balcony.......eerrrrrrrr!!!!! so I have to mount off window ledge......I have a wilson 1000 and a workman saturn groundles antenna......just have to figure out how to mount it.....what channels you guys hang on???? not many people on the radio anymore..........
Just saw your post Tin Can & herbman, glad to see there are still a FEW guys left.
I don't mind having 35 out of 40 channels to myself, but it does get boring and 19 is not what it used to be.
I am on Ch.8 AM for skip and stuff, but if you call me on 19 you will hear me for sure. I am just north of the city, less than ideal location but that has not been a problem yet. Well, the 100kv hydro lines are not helpful but I am far enough away that they don't effect the CB band.
You can also hit me on SSB, anything from 35 up works; just hit me on AM first.
I have been itching to go up the CN tower with all my radio crap. From experience though portables SUCK if you are not standing on a real ground, I have yet to figure it out totally but a buddy who has some crazy antenna test gear basically mapped the RF field around my body on the 9th floor of a concrete building. Let's just say, weird things happen to waves that big in buildings without a proper ground, I was on a balcony too!
In two of the tests we head 75% of the radiation coming out of my HEAD and beaming almost vertically up through the building rather than towards the horizons. We think it has something to do with the water pipes and frame of the building, when I key up my body becomes part of the radiator and I turn the building into a radiator as well. That's all fine and dandy since everything is vertically polarized but something happens which should not, the energy lobes point towards space. That means somehow buildings directionalize these improperly grounded signals against the angle of polarization. Basically, what happens contradicts radio theory. We notice this same problem in just about all structures taller than 5 floors. This weird radiation stuff starts at about 40 MHz.
As soon as you put an antenna on a good ground (water pipes are the best) everything radiates as it should.
Anyway getting back to the CN tower, I want to go up there with a portable and Wilson 1000, head out on the observation deck and see if I can make some contacts. They cage off the whole deck, so you can't jump over the edge and actually fall, or throw stuff like money to the ground. The cage might block the radio waves
I would really like to get a small plane and put a nice vertical whip sticking out of the bottom. See how many people I could pick off from a few thousand feet, hahaha.
