RCI-2980WX

What can anyone tell me about the RCI-2980WX? I'm contemplating selling off the Cobra 2000 I have and getting one. I thought about the Galaxy 2517, but I would like to have a 6 digit readout. I guess I could also consider the RCI-2995DX.

I don't typically do radios with built in weather, but it's not really a bad thing. I always run a low pass filter in line that is from DC-30mhz. The WX channels are around the 162mhz range, so it may not work with the LPF. The 2980WX and the 2995 really aren't in the same ballfield. One is amplified, and one is not. Totally different animal with different applications.

I'm a big fan of any 29xx series of radios, and they're far superior the the Galaxy 2517. The 6 digit frequency counter is very useful, especially if you want to take advantage of 10m ssb phone operations.

from personal exp., the 2980wx is the same as the galaxy 88 accept a base stlye instead of a mobile style, both are great radios, n the 88 does not have wx but the 2980 has eveything the 88 has like echoe, rr, freq counter, its a nice little radio, i might get me another one in the future, just like linx has said, if ya put a low pass filter on it, ya wont be able to pick up the wx channels really well...Dj

I don't care if it doesn't pick up the weather channels. I just like the look of it more so than the 2995DX. Besides, I have no need for the power that the 2995DX puts out.

Nice radio, but as you might expect me to say, for that kind of money, you are into HF rig territory, with much better quality. An hf rig will give you 100 clean watts, and if you don't like that power, just crank it back and let it loaf. If you're into sideband, it is the only way to go, even if you get a plain icom 718, new for $589, or step up to the yaesu 450 for 650. I think those ranger bases get into the mid $400 range. For $150 more, get twice the quality and much much more frequency/band coverage. The only drawback to the hf rig would possibly be am sound quality, and that's debatable.

The problem is that most HF radios have crummy sounding AM audio. Besides, I just want to add to the collection.

I've always thought it would be nice to nave a 2980 or a 2995 boxed up in minty shape. As demand keeps falling, they will be the collector dream rigs of tomorrow. -drdx

That's the way I'm kind of looking at it. I've got this 2000 here that I put some money into getting it in tip-top shape...unfortunately, the face has some wear on it and you can't get new ones. I've got a decal coming that will make it look as close to original as I can get it. Originally, I was going to keep it..but I think I'd like to get something new.

BTW, drdx, Icom has a new radio coming out...the IC-7600.

I heard about that, but haven't seen one in person yet. I'm close to TX Towers, so maybe I'll stop by there. I'm rallying cash for my new hf rig and that may be the one. I can't decide to do a semi budget rig (450 or something) and a new Ameritron, or just a nicer hf rig. Thanks for the reminder. edited in: the 7600 is definitely too much for me, at $4k, ouch on that, but nice. I spent $3k on an MP once, and I'll never do that again.

Man i hate to bring you bad news but the Rci 2980 radio uses the same main board as the Galaxy radios. And i maybe wrong on this one but the 2517 uses the new galaxy main board same as in the Ranger Superstar 158

The 7600 isn't available yet. You might be thinking of the 7700. The 7600 is very similar. A picture of it is here:

Yeah, I'm familiar with it, and saw pics of it from the japan show, but I read somewhere that they would be in the $4k range, but I hope they're wrong. It looks nice. -drdx

Darn...if it's going to be in the $4000 range, I might as well get the 7700. It's about the same price. I really wish I could get an IC-7800. At $10,000 I doubt I'll get one....unless my employer gives me one. After all, Premiere Radio Networks bought Art Bell one for his birthday when it first came out.

Well, quick unreliable research tells me that it is the replacement for the pro III and I've seen $4k mentioned in a few places, and $3-$4K mentioned in others. Either way, I don't like that many radio money eggs in one basket, so I'm out but it is nice. I'm stuck here with restricted antenna possibilities so my best buck performance needs to include and amplifier to get me that few db I can't erect here. Don't worry skipland, I'll still be in the car and as irritating as ever, especially after this alternator bracket fabbing. -drdx
