Predator 10K on a roof mount?

#19962

Post by Glorfendill »

Ok, I've got a 88 Chevy S-10 that I want to get a Predator 10k for and mount it on a roof mount. However the ones I've seen so far, such as the Firestik K-4ADD [ external image ] seem a little small.. I just keep picturing the weight and wind resistance on it causing it to rock around until it starts forming dents in the roof and perhaps eventually breaking off all together leaving a 2 1/2" hole behind.

Now I've also considered taking the bottom portion to a local metal shop and getting a duplicate made but in something more like a 5-8" diameter, thus spreading any pull over a larger area.

Do you guys think this would work well, or do you know of a better Roof-mount, or I guess a REALLY good second Option that would work.. Unfortunately I'm kinda against mirror mounts due to some of the trouble to run coax from there myself. I already have a tool box on the back so that kills any Bed-rail mounts.

Well to keep from drilling a hole you could get a tri-mag.
The sponsors have them.
I may be wrong but I don't think the Predators are very heavy.

I had been thinking of using the roof mount with that custom built bottom piece and actually going with the 27" there ;-)~~

I know I've got a wicked mind... But Like I said I've got a truck toolbox in the back already, so no place to mount an antenna behind the cab

and I'm actually trying to get away from a magnet mount for something more permanent.

If I remember correctly, Some one, maybe mr RA has large plates for roof mounts to spread the load. One I saw was about 1 foot in diameter.

And its not the weight that is the problem, its the wind resistance.

I think i saw a post RA had a few weeks ago his predator 10K flew off at 109mph, so I don't think you have to worry to much about wind resistance.

Well Mr Coily is kinda out of his mind when it comes to those roof mounts.. $60 for the 6' is bad enough... $120 for the 1' is just insane. I work right next to a local metal shop that could probably crank one out for me in an afternoon for about $40 at the 1' size range.

And as for the predator flying off at 109... I'm sure he had his on a nice strong mount. I'm planning on putting mine on the middle of the roof of a chevy S-10... it's not the antenna flying off i'm worried about, its the antenna wobble weakening the roof itself over time. Yeah Springs help and i'll definately be using one, but there's still gonna be pull on it every day for as long as I'm driving it!

LOL how do you guys remember that! Yea I handmade a magnet mount, and it blew off at 109 mph! It wasnt the antennas fault, I scratch it up to......ummmmm a bad design by me! LOL The antenna lived however.....hence good design! lol

Thumper, I never heard of that, using a saw blade. Thats a pretty awesome idea! Its flexible, but tough.....hummmmmm
