Need help with Antenna Please

#20224

Post by SIMP »

I just got a Uniden PC68XL and it works great. However, I need to upgrade my Radio Shack antenna. It will be going on a 2002 Chevy Lumina.

Of the following, which would be best?

1) Buy a trunk lip mounting bracket and use with a Wilson Silverload or Firestick antenna.

2) Buy a pre-assembled Wilson 1000 Trunk Lip Mount kit.

I'm not necessarily sold on the exact brands or makes. The real question is what would work best, a separate trunk lip mount using a separate antenna like a Firestick or a mount and antenna combo like the Wislon 1000? I think you know what I’m asking. You're help is appreciated.

I would reccomend a 102" whip and you can mount that right onto your rear bumper. I run a 102" with my 68 and its great.

Of the 3 you listed the Wilson 1000 is the best, 102" is a great antenna, but I would not mount one to my car or Mini van, I do on my pickup, I use a Wilson 1000

Wilson 5000 mag mount if you don't want to drill the hole. Predator 10K if you do!

I would say that the whip wouldnt be good no the lumina as there is no real good mounting area on that vehicle. The 1000 would be a good antenna. I would stay away from fiberglass whips entirely. The Wilson 5000 would also be a good choice, could go to a mag mount and mount it on the roof instead of the trunk. Mounted on the roof would give you a better ground plane.

What is the difference in a fiberglass with helical coils versus a metal whip? I've also noticed that there are different loads.....base, center, top and no load. What does all this mean? Thanks.

Fiberglass is a strait fiberglass rod with a wire wound around it and the entire thing coated with a polomar. wound wire is not very efficiant and not able to handle as much power. Usualy the worst TX RX of all antennas.

The loads on antennas like Wilson ( Will use them as an example ) are suposed to clear any obstruction. Examp, Wilson 2000 trucker has a different bottom shaft length so that you can get the coil above the cab of the truck. Gives better TX RX that way, ground planes above the cab.

Base mounts like Little wil, 1000, 5000 mag mounts would be good on roof, then the coil ( Base loaded ) is above the cab/roof and into clean air for TX RX. These have metal whips on top of the coils.

Metal whips like 102" has no coil to heat up, can handle the most power. Has no wound up wire, is a strait 1/4 wave ( I think ) antenna. But hard to mount on a vehicle parking in a garage, bank window, trees, etc.
