How do I get the sound file small enough? Putfile

Hey Guys,
I've done some recording that I want to post on Putfile, but I am having trouble lowering the file size enough.
How do I get a high bitrate / large file reduced to fit on Putfile? I've made an account but I am having trouble getting a successful upload.
Am I thinking correctly, that once I get a sound recording small enough on my C drive, I should be able to load it to Putfile?
