What do you do to peak and tune

#22111

Post by darkhorse »

I have a Uniden PC78Elite that I had peaked and tuned. I know I'm putting out a lot better now (also with the new antenna). But what does a peak and tune usually entail and do I get more watts, or just more effeciency. I'm new at this, so give me 3rd grade level comprehension. I had it tuned from the guy that runs the CB shops in the 2 TA's in Oklahoma City. Also got a striker antenna and new coax there with SWR around 1.2 all around. I'm pretty happy with it, but just need to get rid of that dag burned squeal (see my topic in the tech help forum). I don't want to walk all over everyone, but I was tired of talking to the truck next to me and getting stomped on by someone 5 miles away.

That is really a loaded question. Some tech's just cut the limiting resistor on the transmit circuit to open up all the power and let it go. Some will use equipment to alter the power and modulation on the radio. The squeel worries me because if it were tuned correctly you wouldnt have a squeel.

The squeal was before the peak and tune, like I said I have a whole thread just on that issue. And the radio is less than a week old, so I doubt it went bad on me that quick.

As for the peak and tune, I listed where it was done in case anyone here is familiar with him. I wish I had a talkback to see how I sounded though. I got several responses back on my radio check saying I was sounding good and I was no longer getting walked on. But I hate echo, yet a lot of other drivers seem to like it as a sign of power. You might be getting out 10 miles, but at the expense of sound quality. So just them telling me it sounds good to them doesn't mean much other than I'm getting out. I don't mind a little echo, but only a little. As a side note, I'm big in car audio and sound quality trumps most everything for me.

In any case, there were times I was wondering if I was getting out at all with my old setup and knew I would get out not much more than a mile sometimes, and now people actually talk with me. lol

Sorry if I repeted myself or dont remember a thread, I read so many. It sounded like you were saying you still had a squeel after the P & T

I am into high end audio in my vehicle and I am into pro audio, recording, Live sound, etc. I prefer cleen sound myself but I do like what a properly adjusted echo can do for a radio.

and talkback is only really any good in adjusting an echo, the rest of the time it should be turned off.

I cheet, I have one of my boys on my base and move out on the mobile to test then swat, let him got in the truck and I get on the base. I know just how both sound then.

I do still have the squeal after the peak and tune. But that's for its own thread.

is the radio grounded if not ground it
run a wire from a screw on the radio to a good ground
on your automobile.

Ground the stereo or CB? I added a ground to the stereo with no luck. But here is my squealer thread. To cut down on confusion, please refer to my squealer thread to help with it:

anytime you run a cb and a stereo
your going to get a feedback squeal. i know
i can not run both in my truck. so i still would run a ground wire to the cb.

Are you using a Power Mic? If you are lower the volume. If that doesn't work see if the squeal goes away when you move the mike further away from the radio. I have talk-back on my radio which helps to get the quality sound you seem to be looking for.

I forgot about this topic. I did get the squeal to go away by running a wire from the CB directly to the stereo, in addition to their normal grounds. I also explained it a little better in the tech forum post. But I am still wondering want the peak and tune changes in the radio...

You get more watts and modulation I think but I'm not very well educated on that stuff.
