PC line in watergating?

Today I was just playing around with the idea of hooking up the ex. speaker jack to the line in on my computer, and it works great. I can hear perfectly out of my headset when people are talking but when recording it dosent pick it up since the mic is doing the recording. Would there be anyway to record directly from the line in? If this would work it would be a very easy way to record watergates with little or no equiptment, only a couple 3.5mm jacks. Did anyone ever experiment with this?

audacity works well... Thats how i do it most of time. Somtimes just through the mic. I have a device that was made for me, very simple, couple relay's and mic jacks , switch and control knobs for delay, gain and input gain. Its a radio interface, i think MFJ makes them also. Mine record, and also key my radio throught the PC once a threshold, which i set is broken. So another words, back 6 years ago i would have a link off my website where people could log into net meeting on my PC and talk and listen off my radio. There are a few out there that will let you listen, But i dont know of any that will let you talk also. priddy cool stuff.

that's how i do my gates. i plug the ext speaker into the mic jack on my laptop, then a set of headphones into the speaker jack. i use the regular old sound recorder, since my trial period of acid 6.0 expired. glad i read this post, i forgot all about audacity
