My only question was about the attenuator. You mention having it on, then off, and when it is on, according to the gates, the signals are stronger. Attenuators lessen the signal. Is it backwards on that 101 as far as the switch language? I've had 101's in the past and cant remember if they had attenuators or not but when the attenuator is on the signal is typically weaker by a set amount of db, and when it's off the signal is full tilt. Were you running maybe a preamp on there? Maybe I'VE got it backwards on the gate. It sounded kinda odd. You mentioned "you may like it better with it on", and then they got weaker on the next part.
Another funny note you may find flattering and may not have noticed. On the first gate, the operator has your "sound". He has that slide of voice, and I think even says "cottonpicka". He sounds like a white guy on a stock mic, I think his handle is rubicon exlax or something. His signal is superb but the audio could be more, and I think he was concerned about copy as he was talking loud like my grandparents used to when they were talking "long distance" on the phone, as if yelling into the thing made things better, and he kept repeating himself about your 500z's and something else I can't remember. I see no need in repeating if you're a confident operator and know that you're throttling needles without question, but each to his own. Say it once, with authority, and move on. That dude could have whispered once and been done. We have that phenomenon here, guys repeating themselves within the same transmission. I guess they don't have anything fresh to say or maybe think the original phrase got caught in the fade, who knows. You know that even for the casual gate surfer that you're known, I find it funny that he has adopted your sound. Is that a NW/NorCal/West coast sound that maybe we don't hear on the air or do you think it is more unique to you? You have a great sound on the gates, I was just wondering.

First of all constructive critisism is welcomed, lame comments are a CLASSIC DUCk move.
4040 caught me testing and tuning on 11 not on the bowl.
Notice how I said I was going for numbers not audio quality. Pay attention what what I was talking about.
Listen to me talk on the bowl, different sound completely.
If you want to run with the big dogs and continue to be a big dog you have to try new and different things to stay towards the top.
Then you comment on my style? Who the hell are you to tell me how I should talk or shouldnt talk.
Where is a gate of you?
Show me how YOU sound.
Point made, Your just upset not only cant you get called on the bowl, you cant hold a convo.
DUCK
Wow, if I'd have known the sensitivity was there I'd have passed on commenting. I didn't realize that this topic was limited to people that had gates, was a big dog, and was qualified to comment. I guess I should have posted this: "Man, I just listened to the gate and man you had my ears pinned back cottonpicka. I plan to immediately invoice for payment via mail as your signal that I recieved has damaged my signal meter and I expect full reimbursement. I always thought that the sound of my first born child, my first recollection of hearing my favorite beatles song, the voice of Neil Armstrong during the lunar landing, and the sound of linx's voice on the phone for the first time would be my life's audible highlights, but finally hearing your voice (keeping in mind I didn't know you existed) TOTALLY TRUMPS any of those experiences."
If that was just you tuning then I understand if it was a little less than stellar. I was just calling it as I heard it. Am I an expert? No. Who is? If you didn't want any input maybe you should have told 4040 not to post it, or maybe he shouldn't have posted it. He "caught you"?? I never heard you say "don't record this, don't record this, please!" I've never claimed to be a big dog. In fact, one of my posts mentions that I'm a card carrying card of the low power tribe. The only gates I know of that have me on them are maybe from Skyhawk and Streetsweeper, posted on another forum, but I assure you I wasn't yelling like it was "lawng disstance". Style wise, what good is style without any input? Regardless of your sound, the words, rhythm of signal and overall audible signature just sounded like 4040, and that's not a bad thing. I commented to find out if that's a west coast deal or something more smaller geographically. If anyone, including me, ever got "upset" over this hobby then I'd think they were too involved in the hobby. I have fun whenever I'm on and I hope you do too.
You posted about style. I don't think I ever said "style". I said "sound", meaning your audio. I actually complemented you on that, and that comment would also apply to your signal. I said that as opposed to repeating yourself that you could have whispered. Is that a complement or what? In fact, I mentioned that you could have whispered once and been done. A complement is a complement, so please take it in stride. Style is much more and you should know that. Style would be keying cadence, listening, frequency slide manners (like the 2kc sliders that "pull in" contacts on 27 .027 or 023, I hear them running on both sides).
I never mentioned how anyone, you included, should or shouldn't talk. It's your radio and if you want to yell at it that's your business. It is of no consequence to me. I don't remember hearing you on the air here in Texas. I'm not mobile often but I do office at home and I'm listening, in front of my receiver, on 27.025, with great regularity, and I've never heard you here, but that means nothing unless you've been on 20 years or something. Maybe you haven't been on since the last cycle and so we haven't had conditions to hear you here. I listen way more than I talk, as I find it easier to learn listening than when I'm talking.
Classic Duck? I'm not sure what that is. I've been on the radio, at least in my area, and that was not long ago, snce March of 83 or so with a real setup, and I'd never heard the term duck before about 1990. In fact it was duck, mudduck, but never classic duck. I'm guessing you are indicating that I'm of the lower end of the power scene in cb. I am. I'm mobile only. I'm low drive, 16 pills, one antenna drive around, 3 elements in the park on Sundays, and that's it. You mentioned that you were going for numbers, and not audio quality. Isn't that what the bowl is all about. Sure, if you can have both, fine, but if they can't hear you then you're not in the game. I commend anyone going for numbers if they feel they need to be a big player on the bowl. I'd rather be yelling, muffled, or whatever other ugly quality you can have in a signal and be heard than being of AM STEREO quality and never getting heard. Isn't the bowl about being heard, "all power", and that the audio part is just icing on the cake, if you're heard? You may sound great but if the ERP isn't there, then you may as well be on a 1 watt radio with a talkback because you're only talking to YOU.
Judging by the name, unless the rubicon part was a name change, you've probably been around this hobby for only a decade or so. If I'm wrong, let me know, maybe my rubicon knowledge is off or you changed handles. I welcome newer operators to the scene as we need them to carry on, and to me if you're of 10 years or less in the hobby then you're able to still say you're a new operator. The term Rubicon is popular as a jeep trail and the term Rubicon express is a company that makes jeep lift kits and became popular in the late 90's, thus the guess. I know, I'm a jeeper. Maybe you've been around forever. If you have, you're old enough to not get wound up about one post that contains honest observations that took days to generate your excited sounding post. I'm drinking and playing wii over her or I'd have never dedicated this amount of time to this but I'm glad you responded. That's why we call it 2-way communication. Thanks, and good luck out there, I hope to catch you on the air.
