Yet another texas star mod-v question?

#240336

Post by ocean pond »

I asked this on another forum about 9 months ago but didn't quite get the answer i was looking for. Here's my dilema, I drive the mod-v(variable wide open clockwise) with 2 watts input and gets me 32 watts out of the amp(deadkey). Also this give no swing at all on the amps output. Am using a Dosy meter. So I tried ajusting the variable back just a bit to the 3 o'clock position. Gave me a reading of 15 watts key and 70 watts swing out of the amp. My question is what size resistor and location(assumed it's near the variable's leads inside the amp) can I change it so I can run a lower value fixed resistance(less resistance) without burning up the variable pot? Thanks

Hi ocean pond,

The potentiometer for the Texas V is probably burnt at the maximum position. It is Blue and has 2 wires on it. Take the outside wire and move it to the other side. It will operate the opposite way. Counter-clockwise will now increase the power. This will last for a time before you will have to replace the control.

The problem is the pot is under-rated. I would find what the best setting is and unsolder the wire and measure the resistance. Whatever the value is replace it with a 5 watt resistor and make it permanent.

Good luck,
Respectfully as always,

Rick

Appreciate your input cb doctor, so would less or more resistance from the variable make the deadkey higher coming out of the amp?

Update: I checked the resistance on a muli meter from point a to b to see where the sweet spot was for my 2 watts input going into the mod-v. Found 27 ohms gave me what I was looking for 12 watts deadkey out of amp. Only bad thing is that I tried to locate some 5 watters and even 4 watt resistors with no luck. Had to end up using a 3 watt resistor that I picked up from mouser's. That explained my confusion about wheither the variable wide open gave me in resistance v/s mininum setting. Thanks CC doctor for your help.

Not that i would want to do this, but if you could find 2 54 ohm resistors run them in parrellel or get a better potentiometer.
I know on my 572 b box which is retired under the desk colloecting dust now, I needed 2 34 ohm 4 or 5 watt resistors for it once, couldnt find them locally and it was before the internet, And i wanted it fixed now. I got 2 66 ohm resistors which is 33 in parallel and it worked fine. I think thats how it works lol. been long time.

Good point Century, I have done this with 1/4 watters, twisting together 2 to get half the resistance out of them, trying to make one half watter but never would be exactly half the resistance it seemed in my experience. There must be some variable to get it to work exactly like a whole, not sure. On another note seems if one of them burnt before the other it would give you some kind of help instead of one resister totally burning out inline.

Getting back to the 3 watt resistor I installed, should it last a while? Guess time and key-ups will tell lol.

Hi ocean pond,

If the 3 watt 27 ohm resistor does not hold up put 4 two watt 100 ohm resistors in parallel. That should work fine. It will give you 25 ohms.

Good luck,

Sorry didn't want to start a new thread on this. I am kind of new to this. I just bought a TS MOD-V PLUS for my RCI-2950 to get some more audio and power on the AM side. I know the max dead key input is 4 watts .... but what is the max swing I can put into it? The lowest I can seem to get my 2950 is 1 watt swing to 13 , is this OK?

Also, will this amp work for ssb or since it is a class c should I just stick with the radios 35 watt pep output on ssb?

Hello, I am new to this but I would like to know how the buttons are handled or how the REC AMP, AM, SSB is used in the texas star

Hello 14kchino, first if you go to the link and post you will be able to see more of the forum, also be able to use the search feature to answer your question better. Please add which TS amp your interested in as this topic is just the Mod-V which is a modulator amp.
