#263083

Post by Cj1 »

i ordered new tubes for my Dak Mark X. just want to know if there is something special i should be doing when i change the tubes. i have Never owned a tube set, and never changed tubes.
is it just as simple as pulling them out and popping the new one's in??

That's about it just make sure the pins are lined up. There will be a space or a notch on the bottom of the tube and the tube socket that shows the correct way to put them in.

If those tubes are new/old stock they could have been laying on a shelf somewhere for years. These old tubes tend to get air inside them over the years. I install tubes then do a "burn in" for at least 24 hours. This may be overkill but several info sources say to use a Variac to start the filament voltage low and bring it up slowly over a certain time period.

by "burn in" you mean just leave the radio on and don't key it up?

I typically carefully remove the lid from the unit, and verify that I am about to replace the proper component, then discharge it with my Harrison Vacuum Component Varactor 1250b probe discharge module(that's all made up), then I write down the number. Then I do my research and find out what doesn't use that tube. Then, it's "bang bang bang, yep, 8950, 12by7a, I see you, you fantastic beer drinking evening killing vacuum tube piece of $%%^^&*" then I beat it with a hammer until you can't tell if it is a betamax or an 8 track player, then replace it with what I want.
