New Mobile CB with SSB... WHATS THE BEST?
New Mobile CB with SSB... WHATS THE BEST?
Ive been running an unmodded Cobra 25WXST in my truck for years now, and it time to move on.
Im looking for a GREAT highend mobile CB radio with SSB and decent options.
I was looking at the Galaxy DX959 and 949 models because they have SSB, Rober Beep, and a few other nice options the others do not have.
But as far as quality and all that whats the best radio out there?
Whatever I get will be tuned etc.. But I want something that will talk great on AM and SSB. Talk back/Roger beep would be nice to have also.
What are your suggestions?
Ive also looked at a few Texas Rangers, and a few other model SSB radio Cobras. But I do not know whats the best and whats better than others. Im sure some do better tuned than others.. im sure some are not as good in SSB vs the others etc..
Give me some ideas please!
Thank you alot

me personally i would steer clear of the galaxy 959 and 949. price will pretty much dictate which radio you get. i'm sure some of the more experienced guys will chime in to give you a hand in the selection process, and be able to explain the radios they suggest and why better than i can.
check out the sponsors on this forum though. lots of people love radioactives stuff. go check his website, and look around see what you like. then ask questions. i hear lots of people love the general lee.
me personally i like the galaxy dx models 33,45,55,66,77,88,95 and so on.

now that being said what price range you looking at
now if you just want a good 40ch cb with ssb i would look at a cobra 148
now it may not be as good as some of the others (2950) etc.
I realize that.. But do they actually come looking for Opened and modded CB radios these days? Cause I know alot of people have them. But im not exactly sure what you ment by your comment?
the 2950 is a Ham not a CB... correct? or am I missing something here?
alot of guys run 10 meter radios like 2590 ,galaxy, magnum, northpoint ,connex, ect.
you have all the cb bans upper and lower and some of the ham not a whole lot . but if you want to ssb good i would go with a 2950. galaxy tends to drift some. but if you want the most for your money i would go with a 10 meter radio :Peace!:

LOL !
99% of all radios using 11 meter or CB bands have been modded in someway or another. All mods are "illegal". If you are going to have a radio modified ( Making it illegal ) why not get one that had a lot of features and more power !
10 meter export radios can be modified to include 11 meter bands or CB. You can then get the best radio with the features you want and have enough power to talk more than the 1/2 mile a 4 watt stock CB can.

1. What the Chances of getting "busted" with the 10Meter without a license?
2. Whats the chances of getting "busted" with the modded CB?
3. How hard it is to talk CB on the ham? if that makes sence. like, is there a switch that I switch on and it shows the cb channel etc?
And how Practical is it to use a 10meter for a CB? Besides skip and SSB, is it practical to use it in everyday situations like truck to truck on the road, down in the mud pits, on the farm, work etc.. I realize the 10meter would stomp the Standard Modded CB when it comes to reaching far distances.

3) 10 meter is not ham
it is a cb with the channles to go up or down into some of the ham channles . how practical is a 10 meter for cb we lets say 90% of cber use them .truck to truck etc. yes there is a switch to selcet what band you talk on it is a better way to run .
im a hard core wheeler and i run a 10 meter in my trugie . :Peace!:
Thanks for the info. Im not new to CB's im just new to all this. For as long as I can remember ive been talking but just on unmodded no SSB 40 Channel CB's. and just "figured" everybody else was also. I knew some had power boosts and some power mods to make them louder and stronger but didnt realize some were on 10meter radios like the 2950 etc..
And Ive alwayse wanted to get my license to run ham but I never have the time and im probably to stupid to pass the tests lol..
So you say "slim to none". Im ok with that, but on the slim chance, whats the kick back? What do they hit you for it they catch you?

Re: New Mobile CB with SSB... WHATS THE BEST?
I was in the same position you were I called Radioacitve Mike answered a lot of my questions.
Your whip will work fine with any radio just check your swrs after you get it installed.
As far as getting "busted", pigs will fly before that happens and I'm being serious. Don't worry about it.
Once you get a big radio, there's no going back.
You would need to run your wires to the battery. Some run the negative to the battery, some to the seat post. Wal Mart has excellent amp/ radio hookup kits in the car audio section. All the wire and everything you'll need for around $20-25.
Hope that helps. Don't worry, we were all new to this radio stuff at one time.

Thanks!!
So about that walmart Amp radio hookup kit. Is that needed for just the radio (say 2950) or is that needed if I run an amp with that radio?
Oops, hit "reply" to quickly.....
The 2950 doesn't have the analog meter with the needle, it has a digital readout on the display. Most people prefer the analog needle (at least from what I've found), but it does at least have a way to view incoming signal strength, output power, modulation, and SWR.
