Shack Grounding Help

I have abase setup in one of the worst places possible a second floor room. I was told that running a long ground from the radio to a grounding rod more than 20 feet away was not a good ground. Are there any other options other than moving the radio to a lower floor?

I have my radio wire up to a battery with the ground going to the negative it seems to be working great so far.
