Tram D201a and Phantom triple stage
I got myself (3) Trams a few weeks back. (2) Tram D201A's, and one D201. I now have them all powering up, and got the best one of the lot working last night. Ive been working on tuning and matching it to my Phantom tipple stage. I am wanting to learn more about setting the Tams output power so it will drive the phantom nicer. I would like to have a low key (about 2W) with about 15W swing. I think my Phantom would like that. I know these radios have been used on phantoms in the past, and was hoping to learn more about the best settings, and mods that are required to make this sound right, and not over drive my gear. I am also seeing more SWR in the radio then what I would like. About a 2.0 to 3.0 SWR, in the radio from the Phantom. I have tuned the back of the phantom the best it will to lower this. At the moment the best tuning I have found is, The Tram set at 1.5W dead key, swinging 4W, giving me a 100W key, and 200W max on swing using the first stage of my Phantom. This is with a SWR of 1.7 inside the D201A, and a SWR of 1.4 on the output of my phantom.
Any input about setting this rig up would be much help. I also have plans to change my phantom out, and put my Eagle 515 Amp inline in the near future. Let me know what you think. Thank you for your time, 73's

How did you lower the carrier to 1.5 watts?Pied Piper wrote:The Tram set at 1.5W dead key, swinging 4W

Not a good idea to lower dead key by altering tune and load,as you are detuning radio RF final stage, you need a power resistor mod in the plate circuit of the final ie a larger value R ,start with one about 1k larger than stock and same wattage, you will probably need a few tries to get it just right.Best and safest to do it with unit off, unpluged and caps discharged.HIGH VOLTAGE,BEWARE.

I agree it isn't a good idea.warlock35po wrote:Not a good idea to lower dead key by altering tune and load,as you are detuning radio RF final
To lower the output an alternate way then putting a resistor to plate and screen of the final is just add a resistor in series to the screen grid of the final which will result in less current draw through the resistor with the same effect you could also use a pot there and have an adjustable wattage output.
