Bad Ground

Hey all,

On my Pete, when the engine is off my SWP Galaxy 99 puts out real good and clear audio. No problem with transmit as I heard it myself. But, as soon as I start the engine, the audio output is garbled and nearly impossible to understand. I can hear the engine noise through the speaker, a whirring noise... some call it alternator noise.

The blower motor makes an audible noise with the engine on and off.

I've a ground issue no doubt but where do I start? Should I run a length of 10 awg strand wire from the cb chassis via a screw in the side, or form the power cord ground side to any point on the frame while leaving the positive connected to the factory 12c connector?

I just installed my Predator 10K on a mirror mount with new Belden mini 8x but have not grounded it. Perhaps the same thing here, 10 awg strand to the antenna base to the frame?

Will and Magnum in-line filter remedy this or is that a waste of money?

Y'all have been a great help thus far.

TIA

Sometimes filters work and sometimes not. I bought a good 35 amp Pos and Neg wire filter and it didnt help me at all. My problem was the location of the power wires in relation to the coax.

As for grounding, Almost as important as your antenna.

Read this thread good. I did and spent several hours and a bunch of 8 ga low inpedance, high strand cable later and I had a good grounding system.

Thanks for the response. I read the write up but question one thing. He mentions to run a cable from the negative terminal to the frame. I presume I need to make a continuous loop. So, can I run a cable from the CB chassis or negative wire connection, to the negative battery terminal, followed by a cable from the negative battery terminal to the frame? Is this correct?

As for the antenna, do I run a cable/wire from the base of the antenna to the frame and/or the negative battery terminal? Yeah, I'm making this a job.... I'm not an electrician

ARE YOU BY ANY CHANCE RUNNING AN AMP? IF SO DO YOU HAVE THE NEGATIVE RUNNING TO YOUR BATTERY? IF SO TRY RUNNING YOUR NEGATIVE TO A SEAT POST OR SOMETHING THAT IS CLOSE! IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU RUN YOUR GROUND (NEG) AS SHORT AS POSSIBLE! I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM IN MY 05 DAKOTA WITH ENGINE NOISE UNTIL I RAN MY GROUND TO MY SEAT POST! NOW IF YOU ARE NOT RUNNING AN AMP I CERTAINLY DOUBT YOU HAVE YOUR RADIO PLUGGED TO A CIG LIGHTER! IF SO RUN IT TO THE BATTERY BOTH POST AND NEG!! JUST MY 5 CENT!

I made a daisy chain of my grounds. All my grounds connect to each other. Battery ground, front clip, frame, fenders, hood, frame, inside cab seat mount bolt, back out to bed, ladder rack, antenna.

My radio and amp are grounded on top of the seat bolt where the main ground come in.

No sir, no amp. No plans on an amp at this juncture. However, after reading everyone's post, I've conclude this:

I need to run a battery cable from the battery neg- to the frame. Then, 10 awg wire from the CB negative to the same spot on the frame. Finally, run a 10 awg wire from the antenna base to the same spot on the frame. Maybe it doesn't matter where on the frame I mount it, but it keeps it all together so I don't have to hunt down each location under the truck.

Also note, short cable... Ummmmm how short? 18 feet of coax from the CB, through the firewall to the antenna mirror mount was just long enough LOL.

So, a continuous loop as I suggested earlier? Kewl
