About Resistor Removal

Sometimes "they" say to unsolder this, cut that etc. In general I'm wondering if it makes any difference if "they" say to remove a resistor, to just cut one side, unsolder one side, etc. It seems if you just cut it, it would be the same as removing it. But I'm certainly no expert. And just in case your wondering, yes I hate soldiering irons!
