I don't know anything about that Robyn radio, but a good SSB usually is going to run more than an AM rig any way you cut it. But a Philly or Taiwan made (older) Cobra 148GTL or Uniden Grant can be had from $50 on up used. It doesn't get much cheaper than that. I run pretty much exclusively SSB and have for years. There are allot of good sounding sideband radios out there, some of them are of the older vintage.

Good luck.

I'm not familiar with that particular model, but Robyn made some pretty good stuff.
A quick search didn't bring up many mods, but that doesn't mean anything really.
If the price is right, buy it!

Sorry I found this post to late. Some clarification first. Robyn didn't make radios. Like most of the popular brand names of the past they had someone build their radios for them. In the case of the 505D it was Uniden and it uses the MB8719 Pll just like the earlier Cobra 148GTL and middle and later Uniden Grant. It could be the exact same chassis as those mentioned but I'm not sure anymore as I haven't saw the inside of one for many years now.

Your absolutely correct it uses the same board as the 148GTL with the MB8719 chip and the schematic for the Robyn 505D is the same as the Cobra 148GTL with only a few minor component changes.
