Do they really use ch. 9 for emergencies?
Do they really use ch. 9 for emergencies?
I have never heard anyone on Channel 9. Do the police actually pay attention to it? Like if I got in an accident on the road and didn't have my cell phone, would Channel 9 work - or do the police/anyone else not pay attention to it?
Has anyone ever had any experience using (or trying to use) channel 9 for an emergency?
I thought the cops stopped paying attention to CB radios loooong ago, that's why I'm asking - to see if Channel 9 is actually ever monitored by any officials for anyone that needs help

I doubt it. You may have better luck using 19 and having someone relay a call to 911 than actually finding someone on 9.
The only exception may be in an "extreme" enviroment (national forest, mountain forest, desert area) where you may have Rangers, or other civilian assistance agencies that have a good "reason" to monitor the channel

here the chp have cb's in this section of california and thay do monitor ch9. a few years ago i was on ch 9 just listing to stadic from my base reading up on ac electronics and i herd someone call out.. thay where 75 miles away up in the mountins stuck in the show... thay where on a small emergency handheld with a crappy magnet mount antenna. i called a tow truck for them and talked with them for the 2-1/2 hours till the truck arived.. i was on the chan @ the right time when thay needed it. people still use it. mostly mexican farm workers who are idiots.
The only thing I've ever heard on channel 9 around here is a bunch of mexicans speaking spanish...which I obviously don't speak. lol
Occassionally when I have nothing else to do and I'm driving down the road when there is no radio traffic, I'll turn it over on 9 for a few miles "just in case." I always hope that if someone actually is radioing for help on 9 I'll be over there at the right time to help them. I'm not sure if there is a REACT group around here or not, but I remember reading that they are still around these days. In fact, I think there was a post a few days ago about REACT on one of the boards.
But like someone posted before me, I think you would be more likely to see some activity on channel 9 in a very remote location where it's someone's only chance for making an emergency contact (ie, no cell signal).

ROFL.... nice analogyWavMixer wrote:I remember the day when REACT ruled Ch 9. KOX 8987 [Please login or register to view this link]operators made sure that the channel stayed clear for emergencies. Now a days they have about as much effect on people talking on Ch 9 as a bodacious set of 38DD tatas have on Brokeback mountain.
These days, if someone says to clear the channel, they would likely sassed BIG time! :D Not much courtesy anymore. Probably not much on 9 anymore.WavMixer wrote:I remember the day when REACT ruled Ch 9.
