Do they really use ch. 9 for emergencies?

#34273

Post by Jim J. James Jr. »

I have never heard anyone on Channel 9. Do the police actually pay attention to it? Like if I got in an accident on the road and didn't have my cell phone, would Channel 9 work - or do the police/anyone else not pay attention to it?

Has anyone ever had any experience using (or trying to use) channel 9 for an emergency?

I thought the cops stopped paying attention to CB radios loooong ago, that's why I'm asking - to see if Channel 9 is actually ever monitored by any officials for anyone that needs help

I doubt it. You may have better luck using 19 and having someone relay a call to 911 than actually finding someone on 9.

The only exception may be in an "extreme" enviroment (national forest, mountain forest, desert area) where you may have Rangers, or other civilian assistance agencies that have a good "reason" to monitor the channel

On the interstate they still monitor it because of the truckers, but for the most part no they don't monitor it anymore.

React Groups still listen in and some drivers do as well. It is still an emergency channel but yes, cell phones have dampened its effectiveness.

The only thing I've ever heard on channel 9 around here is a bunch of mexicans speaking spanish...which I obviously don't speak. lol

Occassionally when I have nothing else to do and I'm driving down the road when there is no radio traffic, I'll turn it over on 9 for a few miles "just in case." I always hope that if someone actually is radioing for help on 9 I'll be over there at the right time to help them. I'm not sure if there is a REACT group around here or not, but I remember reading that they are still around these days. In fact, I think there was a post a few days ago about REACT on one of the boards.

But like someone posted before me, I think you would be more likely to see some activity on channel 9 in a very remote location where it's someone's only chance for making an emergency contact (ie, no cell signal).

9 is nothing but spanish anywhere in FL! I gave up trying to tell them it's for emergencies only.

I remember the day when REACT ruled Ch 9. KOX 8987 [Please login or register to view this link]operators made sure that the channel stayed clear for emergencies. Now a days they have about as much effect on people talking on Ch 9 as a bodacious set of 38DD tatas have on Brokeback mountain.

LMAO! I drove down to Hometead, FL, and I'd swear they were talking to Cuba on channel 9!

IIRC the Mexican version of the FCC dictates the use of channel 9 as a general use channel. All of the taxi's that I have been in from Cancun to Belize all ran on 9 for commercial use.

I remember a long time ago (in the late 70's) I talked on channel 9 once. The civil defence came on to tell me the channel was for emergencies only.

These days, if someone says to clear the channel, they would likely sassed BIG time! :D Not much courtesy anymore. Probably not much on 9 anymore.
