bought that hr 2510
bought that hr 2510
hi ya all, wanted to let ya know i went this weekend and picked up that president hr 2510.sure is different to work with then a my galaxys.i had my wife get on my base to hear what i sounded like and she said it was like night and day.
she said she surely likes this 2510 compared to my galaxys.i haven"t tried it with my 2 x 8 amp yet.it doesn"t have a dial a watt on it but the cb tech set it at 2.sure hope i don"t have any problems with the amp at that setting.
this davemade amp is really touchy with deadkey settings.to much and it will really fly high on the watt meter and the swr will go up also.if anyone here has been to the other forums you"ll know what problems iv"s had with this problem.
here" a question, does a meter box like my static 600 have to be calibrated? iv"e never heard of it being done plus if you do i don"t know how you would do it.probably sounds like a dumb question but i"m just curious.
why i"m asking is because when i go by the dead key on meter box the dead key on either galaxy or the 2510 are a little different.i before took both of my galaxy 88"s to the CB tech and he said they were fine.the radios dead key matched to his meters.
another thing that's weird is that when i"m driving down the road i"ll dead key and the meter box says 1.1 on Sr then farther down the road it"ll read 1.5 to 1.6 then later it"ll go back down.conditions maybe?
iv"e checked all connections and iv"e done a ton of grounding.oh,this experiment was done running with no power.i"m starting to wonder if this 600 meter box USN"t the best to go by.maybe my set up iv"e done over the last couple of months is ideal and the meter box is making me do more work then i have to do.
its scary because i don"t want to hurt my amp or my custom built 800 motor maul that's coming in.you all know that those mauls Sr have to be no more then 1.3.i thankyou for any and all replies.

Meters are funny,,,Dosy's are that way,,I can hook up a radio on the base and check a dead key,,,it will show 2 watts,,and then later it will show 2.2 watts,,,nothin to worry about,,,,all meters are truely just to give you an idea,,,except BIRD 43 meter is true all the time,,now for amps,,,most amps are tested at 3 watt dead key and can take more than that,,,Lower dead key does mean longer amp life,,,but if the dead key is too low you won't key the replays in the amp,, Also dead key is effected by your mic,,,turn down the mic gain and then check your dead key,,,your 600 meter is still a pretty good meter.....I had 2 Dosy 4002 test centers,,both meters gave me different readings,,,,so I sold one of them and use the other to just give me an idea what a radio is doing on the bench,,,you won't hurt your amp at 2 watts,,,or even 3watts , more will cause heat and shorten pill life,,,1 watt probably won't key your relays though,,,just hook up the radio to the amp,,,turn the mic gain all the way down and key the amp,,you'll hear the relays and see it on your meter
.... a question, does a meter box like my Astatic 600 have to be calibrated? iv"e never heard of it being done plus if you do i don"t know how you would do it. probably sounds like a dumb question but i"m just curious.
Yes, they can be calibrated, but unless they are drastically off, leave it alone.

I have to agree with BigBopper on this one. Anywhere up to 3 watts UNMODULATED should be good on that amp, but 1.5 to 2 watts would be better. Myself, I usually cut the mic gain all the way down on mine, find an open field, open my radio and adjust the variable pot inside to give me the best reflect reading, THEN bring the mic gain back up and RECHECK. Yes, I am setting the radio different from the traditional 2 watt dead key, but I set mine for best performance, not tradition. Sometimes a bit of fine tuning is needed at this point. NEVER whistle when you're setting the modulated output... the idea is to peak the radio to the pitch of YOUR VOICE, not a whistle, unless all you ever plan to do is whistle in your radio all day... LOL! If you're long winded, I have actually set my SWR meter while holding a constant "HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEllo" in the mic. Just like you set it with a dead key, set the forward, then without stopping the HEEEEEELLO, switch to reflect and look at the SWR.

SWR will always change as you are moving, just as it will change sitting still depending on your surroundings. If you're in a wide open area with nothing around you, you will get your best SWR reading. If you park near another vehicle, building, lightpole, etc... the SWR will change. The rf sees these objects and may either bounce back creating reflect watts, or find them as a part of your ground plane signal which usually makes your SWR drop. Driving, the signal is effected the same way. Your antenna stinger is swinging back and forth in the wind, changing the way it sees your vehicle as a ground plane, and if you are passing other vehicles or trucks, the antenna may very well see them as a source of ground or even reflect the signal just like above. I run a Bird dual line on mine, and watch the reflect going up and down the whole time i'm driving. Might go as high as 18 to 25 watts when i'm around an overpass, guard rail, or too close to a big box truck, and then drop back to the normal 2 watts when I get past them. This is normal - nothing to worry yourself about.
Hope this was of some help to you!

thanks guys, yesterday i took a ride and tried the 2 x 8 with this 2510.at deadkey of 2 watts the amp deadkeyed about 300 watts and swung to 1700 watts.the Sr stayed at 1.1.
my wife was on my base and again really enjoyed how i sounded, better then ever she said.now a few minutes later i keyed up and all heck broke.at dead key, the radio was like it was never adjusted for 2 watts.it peaked right out.
with the amp"s dead key it went up to like 700 watts and the Sr went up to about 3.i only dead keyed for a second when i seen that.seems like when for about a few seconds i talked to my wife the amp threw the dead key adjustment way off,its dead keying at 10.
this is why i like dial a watt.guess i"ll have to call the CB tech and have him order a dial a watt.had to put my galaxy back in for now.that sucks, you buy a radio and can"t use it if you want to run power.
