I found this on youtube and was wondering if you guys can really listen in on this kind of stuff. What kind of receiver do you have to have to do it?

I would imagine that's quite possible for that to be real. Find yourself a shortwave receiver.

Yep...shortwave radio with a good wire antenna or HF radio with the same. You'd be amazed at the radio stations available to listen to (if conditions allow). It's quite addicting!

Can you hear things like that? Sure, but not very often or reliably. I would suspect that particular reception was gotten much closer than half way around the globe, it's just too clear for the average antenna and receiver to hear here. Another consideration is what frequency do you listen to? The commonly used frequencies for different things are different according to where they are coming from. So you definitely -could- hear things like that, but don't count on it, you know? Lots of scanning for little results unless you're lucky.

Short Wave Listening can be fun but you will have to do some research on the frequencies, there is a lot of public stuff out there and some not so public stuff. That "YouTube" was just a good receiving day, most of the time you are listening to static. Also some stuff is illegal to rebroadcast even on "Youtube". With satellite and cell phones SWL is dying out. I guess it is all a matter of what you are interested in.
