Some of those handhelds will suck the life out of double A's. I have an old bearcat 2500 scanner. The battery pack would only last a few hours brand new. I had to rotate 2 packs to keep going. I had an old realistic cb walkie talkie that held 8 or 10 double A's back in the 80's. I couldn't afford batteries for the thing. It was like filling up your gas tank. Those handhelds are just rough on batteries. IMO

I have a few hand helds and they drain the battery's all the time so I do not leave battery's hooked to them.

No that's not normal. do the same batteries that appear to be dead work in other things? just wondering if the radio is actually draining the batteries or if its a circuit in the radio not picking up the batteries to power the unit. Something loose maybe.

Most AA batteries are 1.5 volt. And most rechargeable batteries are only 1.2 volt. I have a HT that uses 8 AA batteries along with 2 dummy batteries or 10 rechargeable. So could it be a low voltage problem?
