Workman Roger Beep Install

#40259

Post by 38Special »

I put in a Roger Beep kit (Single Tone) on my Cobra 138 last night, and while it does work I'm not real impressed as the "beep" isn't loud. In the instructions it says to hook up the white (beep) wire to your audio mic pin, or to the mic gain control, I put it on the mic pin. If I switch from the audio mic pin to the mic gain control will I get a louder beep? And I assume that it would be wired to the red wire going to the pc board (mic amp), not the audio wire coming from the mic pin or to the ground (3 wires on the mic gain control). Or can the pro's out there tell me how to do it best? Thank You, TJ

I think they do mean the same wire from the mic pin, if yours is anything like mine, cobra 138 xlr, it is loaded with ceramic capacitors. so I would try it on the inside of those ( on the controller ) on the same wire. this might give you some control over the volume when you are using it.

I am just guessing of course. if that doesn't work, mebbe someone else has a better place.

Just off of this, mebbe you can tell me what that beep is made up of. think I could make one myself out of spare parts?

It's a little circuit board with a micro relay, IC chip (I believe that's what it's called) and several resistors.
I'm beginning to think that these "Roger-Beep" kits are junk. I've probed around with the kit hooked up looking for a better audio input with no luck. They give a crappy weak "beep", and the "Roger-K" kit is about the same.
I've also picked up a squeal now in my audio when I run a small amp, and I'm suspection it's probably has something to do with the "Beep" kit. I spent a few hours installing these on a couple different radio's, and none perform to my satisfaction. I am thinking of taking them all out this weekend, as they have inferior wiring, perform poorly, and foul the audio with a crappy beep that sounds like a squeal. I wouldn't put one of these kits on my neighbors walkie talkie. They are Junk Junk Junk. I'm looking for a crisp beep like the Magnum export radio has. :x
