Turner +2 mike comparison - vote your choice!

You are welcome to vote in this highly scientific poll :icon_e_smile:

The mike on the left is an example of the original paint color, Light Blue Hammertone. I painted the other two mikes in brilliant Metallic colors.

All are nice, but I like the one in the middle the best...The turquoise cord looks better on blue than red IMO.

I wanted to replace the original cords on both of the painted mikes with black cords. The obstacle is that the cord fastener is permanently riveted to the base. I would need to drill out the rivets and replace them with a bolt and nut that was measured & cut to exact size. I was reluctant to undertake this big step, maybe I'll tackle it as a follow-on project.

I also voted for the metallic blue. Red is okay, but that blue mic cord that Turner used just never did it for me. I'd really like to know the line of reasoning the designers used when they chose robin's egg/gag-me blue as the primary color for the Plus 2's. That's the main reason I went with the black & chrome version they made for Sears (plus it was $5 less back in 1965!). One thing for certain, you could never fault the Plus 2's performance, those things just flat-out talk. 8)

Ah, not much love for the red one!

I thought the red one was a +2 with attitude.

Oh well, you never know until it's done and you take a survey.

This poll will remain open, so anyone can add their vote when they see it. Thanks for participating!

:bounce: I'm going out on a limb nd pick the Red one, a can of Krylon spray paint would give me a black cord. I gotta give you credit for a really nice job on all three.

The challenge with replacing the cord with a black one is that the cord holder is attached to the body with rivets, not screws. So I would have to drill them out to replace the cord, which is a destructive operation that entails risk in damaging the unit.

Regarding your suggestion of painting the cord with a can of back spray paint, have you ever tried that? I wonder if the paint would adhere to the elastic covering? I'm imagining it might crack and flake off with movement of the cord.

Definitely the Red one.

If you are going to vary from factory standard you need to make a fashion statement and the Candy Red certainly does that!

I found this spray paint. It's supposed to be flexible, so I'll try it. Will have to wait until Spring when it's warmer outside ... where I paint.

probably work...But then again any spray paint might work... From personal experience with spray paints, I know when you accidentally get spray paint on something you didn't want it on...It's hard as heck to get back off!

It's been a whole year since my last posts showing my Turner desk mikes custom painted in metallic blue and red (shown in first post). The feedback I got on this thread was that the red mike looks good, but would look GREAT if the cord were black instead of the OEM blue color.

The obvious solution would be to simply replace the old cord with a new black one. But the cord is attached to the mike with a riveted assembly and was not a simple remove & replace operation. So my plan was to paint the cord, but I was concerned that paint would crack on the elastic cord which stretches and retracts. So I tried Rustoleum Vinyl paint spray, which is used on vinyl seat cushions and similar items that have a natural stretch.

It worked out very well! The paint does not crack or split. The cord looks like it was always black, not the result of a paint job. I had to stretch it so the coils would not be touching each other while the paint was drying. I was concerned that the prolonged stretch might cause the cord to lose it's natural coily-ness, but it retained it's shape. The black cord matches the black highlights on the mike, creating a much better overall look. It's slick!

I wanted to get this done before the end of this year, so I just made it. I would not have tackled this little project without the prompting from some members of this forum. So Thank You, I'm very pleased with how it came out! Merry Christmas!
