oh my god! Today I made my first contact and it was right when I was starting to lose hope. I called out about a hundred times and then it happened. On 39 lsb I heard a station named 170 out of alberta, ca come in real clear and I called back thinking nothing of it and then he actually responded to me and I confirmed his numbers and location and he confirmed mine! I was about to crap my pants and now I have a smile on my face that I can't wipe off.
I was in Springfield, Ga calling as 256 on 39lsb at 3:45 pm on a uniden 980(recently tuned) with a wilson 2000 mag mounted to my car and confirmed contact with 170 in alberta canada!

Congrats' ppatz! There is nothing more exciting than making your first DX contact for sure. I remember it like it was yesterday and can't believe I not only had him call my name, but carried on a qso with him! You have to be super careful though...it's experiences like that which cause us to be seriously bitten by the bug! Next thing you know you have antennas, amplifiers, radios, mics, and all kinds of accessories laying around, chasing more DX, and getting very little rest. Ahhh...those were the days! LOL
I really enjoy the 980SSB rig I have...but as mentioned sometimes it's about being persistent and even looking for ways to gain a little edge. I pretty much run exclusively SSB mode and have for the last couple of decades at least. Much easier on my ears...especially when DX is rolling.
Keep up the good contacts and hope many more come your way.

LOL on the depends!!! no doubt that I have been bitten by the bug as well, I made another contact with station 170 in alberta today on 38 lsb and now I want to get a base station going. I have already experimented with a mag mount antenna on sheet metal elevated on the roof and powered by battery but I was a little worried about not being grounded like I think i am with a mag on the roof of my car.
I know this is late but I've been away awhile with work issues but I wanted to add my 2 cents worth! CONGRATS ppatz! I too have a980, awesome radios aint they! Like 231 said, you will get bit by the bug! I sure did, now I'm going to get all the materials I need to study and take the HAM o/p license. I just have to find me an operator willing to help me out in my area. 73's to ya ppatz!
