A local here runs a ProStar, his mirrors have an antenna stud built in but it does look like the mirror is isolated from the door which I don't think is metal either. Might want to contact a dealer to see what antennas they recommend, they could be a NGP (no ground plane) antenna.
I also took the liberty of changing the title to "Antenna Question".

I had a guy with a brand new Freightliner call me for a radio. Didn't have much time due to his schedule, but installed the radio and hooked it up to his factory coax and got a bad SWR, about a 3. When I looked for the antennas, he told me they were built into the top of the sleeper and were better than any other antenna. He thought the problem was the radio (a 29 LX) but I also had an older Radio Shack ssb there he was interested in so hooked it up. It didn't have a warning light or swr meter so he said it worked fine. Told him he'd ruin it without getting the antennas fixed or tuned or something. He said he would, but I'm sure he fried the radio if he used it alot. I don't know about these factory wired coax and antennas some of the semi's are using today.
