I have a superstar 158 edx the radio works good the volume will go out but the meter will still show receive and it will still transmit and modulate thank you

What do you mean the volume goes out ? The speaker ? If so try a external speaker and see what happens,

That radio was notorious for cold solder joints, that is what I'd be looking for, I believe the volume control is on a small board as well.

start looking for cold solder joints on the main board. as stated earlier these radios are notorious for cold solder joints right out of the box.
