Uniden pc122xl TX level low

#394463

Post by nosaj »

I have a uniden pc122xl it was putting out 3.5 watts AM into a dummy load and maybe 6 watts USB/LSB.
I move VR10 to up the AM power to about 6.5 watts on a meter.

My Question is what would cause it need to be bumped up and what I can I do to see why SSB is so low.

Thanks,
Jason

What type or model watt meter are you using to check the wattage? SSB is best checked on a meter that can do PEP. I would readjust the AM back to a lower wattage to let the finals have some breathing room, the receiving radio won't see a difference between 6 or 3 watts but it will sound better at 3.

Never having done that do you have a resource a first timer can go to . To do that?
I have a scope, a frequency counter, rf generator, monitor scope and a dvm(all in good shape)

Thanks,

never have found a service manual for this radio but the realistic trc-453 is the same board and you can use it to align the uniden 122xl radio. this is the one I have used for years. this radio is a great talker but has never been a real power house as far as wattage output. I own a 122xl, plain 122 ,trc-453, trc-465 and all are about the same as far as output. they all use the same board.

Full alignment would be best of coarse, but if you want a quick result with SSB peak power, turn the ALC down. Can't remember the pot number, it's written on the board. I'd set it for around 10-12 watts peak, you don't want to over work these radios, they have enough trouble getting the heat away as it is. And like Greg said, bring that AM carrier back to around 3 watts, this will give some room for the audio too. Then do an on air check, check the sideband in particular, if someone says it sick sounding like a power wobble, I have found that it is often the ALC clamping too much in these radios, so give it a little adjustment until it comes clean (turn it down a little further). Some may disagree with this approach, but it has worked for me with several of these exact radios.

Page 19 list a quick and dirty tuneup. Quick question should the dc measurements be taken with an RF probe?

i constructed one yesterday and it works.

Thanks,
Jason
